I had a debate with a friend recently. I have a Browning BLR 30-06 and he h as a 270 ( not sure what brand). He says his is the better gun cause the 270 is a flatter shooting more accurate cartridge. I said unless we become snipers or something that the difference , if there is any, would be so small that unless your a pro you wouldnt notice it. Any truth to what he is saying?

not near the selection and range of weights available to the .270 as the .308
The .30-06 and .270 are basically the same case (+/- a few 1/100th's of an inch) and necked to slightly different hole sizes.
The .30 caliber holes are more versatile because I have personally loaded 100 grain plinkers all to way to 220 gr round nose bullets. The .270 bullet range doesn't go that far, nor can you have the selection of variable weight bullets and types. So, for my money (and I own both calibers) would be a .30-06 all the way. No question. Period.

If were are talking factory ammo, same brand, same grain etc... all things being equal, there really isnt much difference between the two, but the 270 due to the smaller bullet will be flatter shooting.

I have rifles in both.

I like 'em both.

Inside 250 yards, shooter doing his part, I doubt the game would know the difference.

NAA.

I know, and its only May! This is usually the "bear defense" thread season. The later spring has screwed us all up.

Its preference. Thats all.

But upon what shall we base our preferences? Upon what, I ask you?

The differences really are too small to matter, but just because it's inconsequential minutiae doesn't mean it isn't fun to debate!

For the record, I prefer .270. It's reputation as a long range cartridge allows me the illusion that I am a competent long range shooter. ;)

I shoot both. Here is my input:

.270 pros:

-Slightly flatter shooting. If you're not shooting much past 250 yards there is no practical difference.

-Will actually delivery more energy to the target past 250 yards. Doesn't suffer as much wind resistance so it retains it's velocity better at this range and therefore delivers more energy to the target.

30'06 Pros:

-Delivers more energy to the target below 250 yards - AND - the larger diameter bullet will obviously create a larger wound channel.

-Can fire much larger bullets than the .270, making it often more suitable for larger game, especially close up.

-Much wider selection in bullets and factory loads available. This is a drastic difference.

Given the above facts, if I were to go hunting I would take the 30'06 every single time. I don't take shots greater than 250 yards. The 30'06 is superior for my use in both hitting power and ammunition/bullet selection. At under 250 yards there is a negligible difference in 'flatness of shooting'.

If your friend is doing 800 meter shooting at the range for kicks, then the .270 is probably well suited for him.

-Can fire bullets which are a full 70grains larger than the .270 because of the larger bullet diameter making it often more suitable for larger game, especially close up.

-Much wider selection in bullets and factory loads available. This is a drastic difference.

Thanks, thats the answer i was looking for.

I know the deer doesnt care. I argued with my friend and told him that the difference wasnt that big, but he swore the 270 was a much better cartridge. I Just wanted to ask the question in hopes some more experienced and knowledgeable people would give their insight. I dont care how many threads have been created before, i wasnt here before and didnt see those threads. If it bothers certain people that much why pop in the thread and comment, why not just stfu and move on to something else. Thats why I do. Some people just like to whine.

At any reasonable range you'd be hard pressed to find any practical difference between the two. 30-06 has the edge in bullet availability for large game ( 200 grains plus), .270 is a little lighter with recoil, a little flatter and will carry energy out a little farther.

But in the real world, at normal range you'll have trouble convincing any animal that there's any difference between the two.
