270 win on game performance

I used the 270 Win for years; shot a ton of stuff with them and probably was an out spoken fan. It always seemed to be enough. So far so good right? Its a great killer of deer sized game; and if you look around the world a bit that is just about everything. Thing is; I found out about 30 years ago that an STW would out-270 a 270 in every way you could measure or observe. It's also no 300 mag. It just isn't. It isn't even a 270 WSM or "bee for that matter. I still have a couple because I loved the rifles they were in, but seldom feel the need to grab one instead of whatever is in the racks next to it.
As hunters and gun enthusiasts we spend a lot of time splitting hairs that don't need to be split. In practice, and in most conditions much of this stuff doesn't matter. Its fun to debate, but much of what gets done doesn't even need smokeless powder never mind a fist fight over the difference between a 270 and a 30-06.

I've said it before, but back before the Internet when Moose and Grizzly tags were Over the Counter, the 270 was considered to be a Big Gun.

.270's don't work... period.

You need a Creedmoor or .243.

LOL. Yes indeed. Only 270's I own are a Win and a Wby. Had a WSM for a while (still have the barrel). I swapped the Win from my brother when he moved to alaska, for a magnum, seemed a better choice for the critters there. I was going to rebarrel it to something more useful, but then shot it and it turned out to be superbly accurate with 150 gr bullets. Stock sucked though, so I swapped it for a safari version without the monte carlo. It works well. Have shot deer with it more than a few times. My brother shot a moose with it when we were out once, though, and we ended up following about 5 miles up a creek where it expired on a beaver dam. I prefer bigger holes in moose. - dan

Did he? LOL

You must be unaware that the .223 is responsible for more Alaskan moose harvests that all other calibres. But if you can’t get it done with a .270, that’s ok too.

Er OK. That's just dumb. Not going to argue with a troll. I've killed elk with a bow and a 338 WM. I've killed moose with a 338 WM and a 270 win. of all three the 270 did the most damage to the meat because it required follow up shots.

I'm just shooting rocks with these so I can have the brass to reload. Got a stack of 170gr Nosler BT, 170gr Berger EOL and 175gr Sierra TGK's to play with

Not going to lie... that 6.8 Western really interests me... but for.the case more so than the knitting needle bullets... would probably still shoot 150's. I have a donor rifle on hand, easy project.
