284 win

I have a light interest in the cartridge, it waned when I got into .280 AI but I still think the design and history is very interesting. I just felt, like many, that it was best in a long action.

Now that Weatherby has given us the 6.5 RPM, I suppose we'll likely see a wildcat 7mm version on what is essentially a stretched "full long action" .284 Win case. That could be neat, and better than both the .284 and .280 AI as well as likely even the 7mm Rem Mag.

I thought about having one built a few years ago but the limited mag box length seemed an issue so a 280 in a long action was for me, a better choice.

Have a couple, one like Dan's, a 600 action in a Brown stock, 5lb., has taken at least 60 head of game. The other, an Alpha in walnut, and it's twin, an Alpha in 25-284,

I have one built on a m600 action with M7 trigger and bottom metal with a brown pounder stock too - I would like to see picks of yours if you post them or pm me some please . RJ

I'm also a 284win fanboy. :) Most of my hunting was with a 284win. My first rifle I owned was a browning micro medallion chambered in 284 so I'm partial to it. I still have it to this day. To me the biggest advantage, especially in a hunting rifle, is in a short action, light compact rifle. You are limited to 120 gr - 150 gr bullets and I believe flat based bullets are a better choice especially if your mag box is 2.800". I've wanted to have a rifle built on this cartridge, I just haven't got around to it. A rifle like Buchmaster's would suit me fine.

a 7x64 will have been better ... but the 284 is a great cartridge. i ve seen a few barrenground caribous taken it but every caliber is working great with the small caribou anyway ...

Problem with the 7x64 (and yes, I have one, and a couple of 280's) is ammo and brass. Not easy to come by now, a decade or more back it was extremely difficult. I got my first factory ammo for mine from a hunting buddy in Spain. - dan

lol Jim the 7x64 came in 1917 thus the reason i like it more than the 280 but yes you re right as well as Dan (it has to be noted i agree with both of you lol) getting brass and ammo can be a problem ...

RJ, I have a winchester extreme weather chambered in 270 which I'm thinking of getting rebarreled to an RPM whether it be 6.5 or 7mm if it ever comes about. I think it will be a good candidate. I'll just need a good supply of brass.

I've read a couple posts on US sites about the wildcat 7mm rpm. Looks fun. - dan
