I've pretty much discovered that the best bench rest .22 rifle is the Anschutz, model 54.
What do you guys think would come in 2nd place?

2nd, 3rd and 4th would also be anschutz 54. Not sure which ones are winning competitions in the world. Bleiker is up there, some of which are using lijla barrels, owning a 54 action is truly a pleasure and worth the $$$

For a little less money... How about a use a used Anschutz 54?

Or if you don't mind spending a little more money, there's always the Anschutz 20xx...

There are undoubtedly some fine shooting rifles among the brands mentioned. The best RF benchrest rifles ,like centrefire, are custom builds using actions like Halle Turbo, Suhl, Time precision and some Rem 40X. The unfortunate thing is that even though very precise, production rifles can't cut it. I like shooting my Anschutz rifles but my 40Xes put them to bed. Bleiker might be a good one or the new Walther KK300 - I haven't seen either set up for benchrest. There are heavily breathed on Ansch. 19XX and 20XX actions but out of the box - no.

The other big variable with RF benchrest is reading conditions - having the best equipment only goes so far. Practice reading atmospheric conditions and time behind the trigger pays dividends.

Remington 40X is still available from the custom shop. Expect about a years wait and $2500 or more. If one is serious about the discipline and wishes to chase the Grail one of the new Stiller Predator actions might be worth looking into. Supposed to be the same overall as the 40X but more precisely made. The finished rifle would probably be in the same $ range as a 40X. If Jerry Stiller holds to his reputation these will make fine rifles.

Forgot all about the venerable Winchester 52. Periodically these rifles make an appearance on the BR stage. Still excellent rifles. There is however a tremendous benefit to having an action that accomodates all the Remington aftermarket and accessory parts.

Will check with the local dealer on wait times. Worth $2500 if more accurate than the 54 actions as the price is not significantly different.

My sako finnfire P94 target is stellar in the accuracy department, even with just run of the mill american eagle ammo...never run any quality target ammo out of it. If I wasn't more than 3000km away from it right now I would fire some groupings for proof...great gun worth $900 when I bought it probably 7-8 years ago

Yes, the Sako 78,94 and the Range are also fine rifles and capable of very good accuracy. To refer back to the OP, you would not find one on a top flight rimfire BR line.
To get an idea of what is used in major(meaning top level) rimfire BR matches,a quick look on Benchrestcentral rimfire section will provide some insight.

If your considering custom jobs, with new barrels, rechamberings and all the magical things a good gunsmith can do then I'm sure even a CZ or savage could shot. But why would one bother spending that kind of money and still have a "savage"? Might as well start at the top.

As bisonhd stated why would anyone take a run-of-the-mill rifle and try to turn it into a winner. There is a reason that gunsmiths like Calfee and Hongisto start with a silk purse , because a sow's ear isn't worth bothering with and they wouldn't stake their reputation on it.

CZ 452 or 455 Help Please

I'd love get my hands on an Anschutz 64, but their a bit 'rich' for my blood.

I have my eyes set on the CZ line.

Should I grab one of the remaining CZ 452s or pay a bit more and upgrade to new 455 (supports 22LR, and .17WMR by swapping barrels...)?

buy a cz 452, you will NEVER regret it,put a yodave trigger upgrade in it for a whopping $15 and you will have a rifle that will give you years of pleasurable shooting. They are a proven platform and you won't find many owners who are quick to get rid of them
