3 Gun Tips and Tricks

In a stage, how many rounds do you typically fire per gun? As in how many mags should a guy have on his LBV?

Also, see many guys compete with 1911, or is something that has a 10rd mag more desireable in competition?

Nobody wears vests in 3 gun... Certainly not load bearing

Just need two (24rd) pistol mags and two AR-15 .223/.556 mags, preferably a 30 round and 40 round... oh and lots of shell candys capable of both double and quad loading... unless you compete in Canada, then you need 5-6 mags of everything.

As for caliber, there is a heavy metal division popular with 1911 fans, otherwise shoot 9mm in as big of capacity available as there is no power factor to consider.

I don't know what matches you are shooting but I have never shot a stage in Canada that required 50 or 60 pistol rounds. Yes I understand you will be reloading before your mag is empty however I carry 4 and seldom use 3. Same goes for AR mags depending on which ones you are using.

What do guys use to carry mags and shells then? I've never been to a 3 gun

Belt rigs and shotshell chest rigs.

Lots of pics in this thread.

If you're just starting out or are just shooting for fun, it doesn't really matter if you use a vest or your pockets, for that matter. If you want to go fast and be competitive you need different kit. Go to a match or two with what you have now and see what other guys are using. Then decide if you want to spend money on new gear.

Real eager for 3 gun over here...

Tacord threaded my SXP Defender barrel for chokes (currently have IC and modified), new +2 extension, 16 shells on Invictus rigs and a decent quad load....I think I will be making the most of my pump shotgun.

Blade-tech 3 x AR mag drop leg rig holding CP LAR mags with extensions. Phase5 extended bolt release.

New Walther Q5 Match and all the accessories.

A few thousand rounds down range.

...all for 3 matches this year lol.

Nothing wrong with that. It's a lot better than zero matches and admiring your kit in the mirror. ;)

So.... in preparation for this 3 gun season I decided to upgrade some parts on my S&W M&P 9. I ordered an Apex trigger kit, the flat face FSS.

I was pretty excited when the kit arrived and set aside the evening to work on this little project.
However, excitement soon turned to frustration when I discovered that my sear block housing assembly was the old style and needed to be replaced as well to make the new kit work properly.
No problem... Brownells to the rescue with a new sear housing assembly....mostly. They are currently back ordered until the middle of April.

Lesson learned? Make sure that you order all of the parts required to complete the installation all at once... lol

Back to using the Springfield XD until the parts come in.

Did my first 3gun (pre season match).
What I learned;
-2 wheeled carts are not the way to go. 3 wheeled jogging baby strollers seem the best.
-the beep brings out issues not found Outside of competition.
-it's a lot of fun.
-it keeps you busy all day, always something to do.

I typically find that a 3 gun match will take all day.

Plan to arrive early to help set up and stay after to help tear down.

Also, plan to hang around a little after and chat up the competitors that you may not know as well as your buddies.
