Wow. 33 pages of reading. I might have to give it a try when I get things together. Where in Alberta are these shoots? Ill look at the other threads as well after this one. I have an AR being shipped out next week that should work well. I only have one handgun now which will work but I would have to find good reliable ammo as I was having trouble with the umc stuff last couple times I was out. It is a 1911 .45 but should get me going for now. Also have a collection of shotguns but all a pump or single shots. Pretty sure my holster will work fine but need a few extra things and to get shooting again. I have been out of the game for about 6 years and want to get back in.

MP3G shoots in Peace River, Grande Prairie, Dawson Creek and Fort St. John. 12 events on the calendar this year.

Closer to you there are matches at the CHAS Gennesee range and I think at Bonnyville and Cold Lake(?).

Also, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Calgary.

Shooting the matches at CHAS are a great way for new comers to give 3G a try. Great bunch of people to shoot with.

Lots of great tips and tricks mentioned here. I will be trying 3 gun this year for the first time and can say that that this thread has definitely been informative, thanks to all.

What I have noticed is that there has been no mention of a very important part of one's gear, that being foot wear.
I finished my first year of IDPA shooting both indoor and out. I wore my work boots for indoor and my hunting boots for outdoor. I feel that wearing a hi upper lends to better stability of the ankle and that was all I had.

I am so flat footed that when I get out of a swimming pool it looks like a big duck just walked by. My feet were pretty sore after these shoots. No sprained ankles however so that was a bonus but I felt that a new pair of boots was needed.

This year, I am going to give a pair of SWAT 9" Classics a go. I picked them up a week ago from a CGN business member for a decent price and have been wearing them every day to break them in. They are a lot more comfortable than work boots and my Irish Setters.

I have an indoor club level IDPA match next weekend. I will report back as to how they performed.

Let's hear what works best for you guys in the footwear department. Do you mix it up? One pair for out? One for in? One size fits all?

I usually wear running shoes unless it's too muddy or wet.

Some guys are wearing golf shoes or soccer cleats, though it can be entertaining watching them on an indoor stage if they don't have a change of footwear.

From what I see in IPSC, you're not a super serious shooter, unless you're wearing Salomon shoes. Even indoors, you need that added grip that they lack. I also just wear Merrells and have no issues in or outdoor.

My Merrells have held up great as well....but I do admit after 8-10 hours my dogs are barking.

IPSC/IDPA/etc question

I've noticed a number of people using magnets on the outside of their mag pouches. I assume these are for stages that require starting from empty pouches? If so, are there particular rules for this type of stage? ie. Could I just throw a handfull of mags in my pocket?

Magnetic mag pouches are just another option. I have them because they are easier for me to use but not legal for USPSA production so I got normal pouches.

You see table pickup starts often in IPSC, where the stage brief dictates all mags to be used are placed somewhere other than your person (a table, barrel, etc)

Sure you could put them in your mag pouches or pockets but why would you want to?

The magnet allows for picking up 1, 2, or even 3 mags in one hand and slapping them on your belt in one smooth motion, when you need them they are available to load quickly.

This is a good tutorial on the matter:

That's all great info and exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks!

In a stage, how many rounds do you typically fire per gun? As in how many mags should a guy have on his LBV?

Also, see many guys compete with 1911, or is something that has a 10rd mag more desireable in competition?

Round counts will vary, 4 mags is a good number. Lots of 1911 10rd mags on the market also.
