Im looking to buy a new rifle, I've hunted for years with old faithful my 1951 300 savage model 99 and an old 303 Brit, but I'm looking at buying a brand new Remington model770. I'm just looking for some input as I'm up in the air about buying it in 30-06 or 300 win mag I hunt moose white tails and black bear and them damn coyotes lol I have a 22-250 just for yotes though. So any input you guys/girls may have would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Skip the 770. If you want a remington buy a 700. As far as 30-06 or 300 Win Mag, I would take the 30-06. I own both and the recoil of the 300 is pretty sharp. I'm use to it but friends of mine think its too much for target shooting. I would suggest looking at the 308 as well.

Honestly, the difference will only be in your mind, for what you want to hunt and the distances normally hunted either one will do just fine, slightly more recoil on the WM but recoil will be stiff in the 770 either way.

The one that is on sale, get that one. ;)

First piece of advice:
That 770 has a resale value that plummets like an eagle's a** in a powerdive, so you may want to look at some other rifle, say an SPS instead.
I would say that the 30-06 will do everything you need it to do, and is much more pleasant to shoot.
Ammo is less expensive as well.
Regards, Eagleye.

Thanks guys! As far as resale goes its not an issue Im a hoarder when it comes to rifles and shotguns I never part with them lol and the only time I usually shoot at paper is to zero in a scope I'd rather eat what I shoot lol. Biggest reason I'm looking at the 770 is because I'm on a tight budget

I started a thread on 30-06 vs. 300 win mag awhile ago and the consensus was that it doesn't offer enough over a 30-06 to really make it a significantly better cartridge. The negatives such as price, and recoil don't justify the slight gains, and the 30-06 will do anything you need it to in Canada anyways.

If you must have something bigger than you gotta look to something like a .338 win mag, or my personal favourite the .375 Ruger. ;)

Stevens 200, Savage Edge/Axis, Savage 111, Marlin XL7, Weatherby Vanguard, Remington 700 SPS(on sale) are all cheap guns that are a hell of alot better than the 770.

Go with the 30-06. Ammo is cheaper ...plus you might develop a flinch. The 3 guys that I hunted with as in moose . Me 30-06 2 with 270's and one with the 300 WinMag.

He sold the 300 and bought a 270. The moose couldn't tell the difference. I owned a 270 ..should never had sold it. But it seemed redundant with a 30-06.

I've seen black bear dropped with 308 and 3030 ...plus moose. Every moose I've taken was with 180 grain bullet in a 30-06.

Ya i was leaning more towards the 30.06 anyway as I already have dies for one I was just curious lol
I've heard a lot of good and a lot of bad about the 770 but like I said I'm on a tight budget and I want a newer bolt with a detachable mag and it's the only thing in my price range I have been looking high and low for used rifles to find there is none

I would say the 30-06 is the more versatile of the two.
More than adequate for the game you listed.

300 Win mag is great too, but not as versatile in the lighter end of ammo and would really only benefit long range, practically speaking. (Of course speed is cool if you're looking for bragging rights, but the 300 is not near the top of that list either.)

300 is a belted case, if that is an issue with you, and can cost more to shoot.
300 louder and more recoil, whatever...

The best advice IMHO would be to investigate a different rifle. Howa, Vanguard, Savage, etc or an older used 700 would be a superior choice, but that's just me.

I like a 270 too I dropped my first cow with a 742 270 I borrowed from my buddy did the job fine and dropped a black bear and a 8 point buck both last fall with my old 300 savage

I'd buy a Stevens in a second if it came with a detachable mag instead of that damn blind mag or even a hinged floor plate that's the only thing I dislike about them

Actually hoss I am serious, I've been considering an axis but I don't like the thin pistol grip on them I mean I don't have my heart set on a 770 but its still an option.

If ya didn't think I was serious the way waste your time commenting?

you can find used rem700. the action is built better then new sps models .
even savage tend to work well with $400 price range or less. if you dont mind recoil and like lil more kick out of your rifle then 300WM. if you like softer shooting rifle for any game in canada, then 30-06 will do just fine. Both will do perfectly fine with any game and will perform like most any other high-end rifles. its just how much you wanna spend for what you carry around i guess.
I even know a person that shoots 22-250 for elk hunt and he can down it with 1 shot. so ask your self if you want higher powder loads or low but still effective.. and follow what your mind says.

Wholesale Sports had basic new Savage rifles on for $400 the other day...the other things is if you can find a used Husqvarna they are incredible!! I just glass bedded and polished/lighter spring'd the trigger on my '56 and it shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards! It's a 30.06.

yea wholesale sometimes save great sales but make sure to call and see if they have it on stock.. if not it might take 4months-1year to get it lol.
Ruger M77's are ok too. little heavier side but good accruacy. I'd love to say that i shoot 1/2" accruacy all the time.. my custom built 30-378 will do .12" sometimes but my skills will not let me shoot that all the time lol. but i do not use gun mount or sand bags.. just free hand with movable bi-pod.
