30-06 vs 300 win mag input greatly appreciated

I agree, a .270 shooting 140 grain Federal Premium Accubonds is a soft recoiling, accurate gun, with a perfect load for deer.
A 30.06 is a bit harder recoiling, but manageable for most shooters with a good Limbsaver recoil pad installed, and if your rifle likes Barnes 168 grain TTSX ammo then you'll have an accurate rifle that'll drop moose and elk perfectly.
The Vanguard and 111 are excellent choices, and great value, as Idcurrie said.

I have rifles chambered in both calibers.

The 300 winmag offers a range advantage over the 30-06, but of course they shoot the same bullets.

If you plan on shooting the game you listed at ranges that are regularly over 400 yards, get the magnum. If you mostly shoot under 400, the 30-06 will be fine.

Don't get the Rem 770. Spend a tiny bit more and get a Stevens 200, or a Marlin XL series rifle. Oh, almost forgot, the Vanguards are on sale right now at WSS for a crazy $349 - buy that, period.

.30-06 being the greatest all-around-cartridge going, if I wanted more 'oomph', I'd go to a .35Whelen or .338WM.

In my opinion (FWIW) there is not enough advantage with a .300 mag to justify it over a .30-06 (and the .308 for that matter is as good as the .30-06).

I would have to choose the 30-06, as my recoil tolerance stops right about there! No magnums for me! If you can possibley gain a bit more cash, go with a quality rifle over a bargain buster! In the end, you'll be glad that you did! Look for a "good used" everywhere you can think of, something should turn up. Post WTB add's, too. Good luck.

Here's the breakdown:

30-06 is a proven, versatile, and high powered cartridge. It can be loaded up or down in so many ways it's crazy. 300win mag allows you to gain 2-300fps velocity over 30-06 giving you flatter trajectories but this comes with way more recoil. The magnum rifles are usually longer, but not by much. 300win mag generates velocities that call for premium bullets. The ammo is more expensive and less versatile.

Many people think the magnums are just a chest thumping cartridge, or for guys with small man syndrome. I think variety is awesome but I don't really see a point in going 300win mag over 30-06. I personally like 308 short actions because you have smaller rifles, more scope mounting flexibility, more ammo capacity, less recoil, and marginal velocity loss over the 30-06.

With all this magnum bashing, I'd still take a 300 if I were going for grizzlies. Considering how there are none where I live, I don't own a 300 or a 30-06. I stick to 308, 303British, and 7.62x39

you can buy any of the previous mentioned models for close to the same price as a 770 if you shop around. Both the Weatherby and the Savage have reasonably priced detachable mag in 30-06.

I bought a Savage Edge 30-06 about two years ago and i am impressed how good it shoot for a "cheap gun"...That was my first gun and i was looking at the same models as you(rem 770,Stevens and Savage edge/axis) but the gunsmith at the store told me to stay away from the 770 so the choice ended on the Edge...i've shot a grouping of 4 bullets in 3/4" at 100yds last week with reloaded ammo...as for the caliber I think its up to you but remember that magnums round are more expensives...

Stevens 200, Savage Edge/Axis, Savage 111, Marlin XL7, Weatherby Vanguard, Remington 700 SPS(on sale) are all cheap guns that are a hell of alot better than the 770.

X2

Please don't buy a 770,

If your on a budget, a Savage 111fcxp in 30-06 or 300 will fit the bill.

I had 30-06 in this rifle in a package deal and got it out the door for $481.00.

Happy hunting

I have only owned one 300 win mag and it was in the Benelli R1 Argo (awesome rifle).

Personally I wouldn't own another 300 unless it came in a semi again (same rifle) and planned to hunt Moose or Buffalo. :)

30-06 should be more then enough.

There's a story I heard a while ago. A shooting competition was offering the 770 as the prize to the best shooter. The second place guy got two of them. I have read and heard nothing good about the 770. I picked up a Savage model 111 off of the exchange for 325 shipped to my door. Came with a little Bushnell 3-9 the basic package deal scope. Pulled it off and put a Vortex Viper HS on instead. Was in perfect shape stock had no scratches blueing on the barrel was mint. Got a good deal in my opinion shoots real nice. If your pinching pennies at least get an axis their not very pretty but they shoot just fine.

OK, so I searched high and low and found a model 700 for $479. Wolverine has the Model 700 SPS DM(detachable mag) on sale in 30-06 for $479 brand new. Check them out site sponsor. Cheers Roscoe

If you can handle the recoil the 300wm is about as versatile as any .30cal and costs the same to shoot as my .308 when it comes to factory fodder.
