30-06 vs 300 win mag input greatly appreciated

Good shooting Kimmer! Yeah, I was using my Harris bipod at the range, getting 1/2" groups...now I know a high end/custom rifle will do that, but I was pleasantly surprised that a 1956 Husqvarna shot that well! :)

Actually hoss I am serious, I've been considering an axis but I don't like the thin pistol grip on them I mean I don't have my heart set on a 770 but its still an option.

If ya didn't think I was serious the way waste your time commenting?

If you pay attention "Hoss" ;) to the advise being given to you, you might see a trend in the comments and replies. The majority so far are saying look at something different than the 770, sage advice...

If you don't want the answer, don't ask the question :)

And like I've said a dozen times now I'm on a budget and I don't have a grand or two to lay down on a rifle that's going to get drug through thick brush and banged around on the bike and in the boat

I'd get a Savage Axis or Steven's 200 over the 770 any day. The SPS rifles were on sale for $499 a while ago, DM model as well.

I'd also go for 30-06 over the 300. It's cheaper and has less kick, but gets the job done all the same. You're talking 200-250fps difference between the two. I'd personally get an Axis SS in 308 to avoid the long action and lowered mag cap.

Well comparing me question and my choice on a rifle to a "killing zombies" thread was pretty f&$king ignorant wouldn't you say?

It was a joke, kinda like the 770. Lighten up :nest: :)

There are lots of "budget" rifles out there better than the 770. Quite a few ideas have been thrown your way so far, take the advice...

No one said you should spend "a grand or two".

The advise given "a dozen times now" was ........... "DON'T BUY BUY A REMINGTON 770!!"

Comprendes?

.

Yup I got that and I'll say it yet again I don't have my heart set on a 770 it was a thought. I only went looking at new guns after seeing used ones on here for as much or more than they are new I have an axis 22-250 and it's awesome gun I was just contemplating something different is all

If you could save up a little bit more you can get a Savage M111. This is mine in 30-06. I paid just over $600 but if you shop around you can get them cheaper.

Should be able to find a Marlin xl7 for that price. Its miles ahead of the Rem 770.

Is that before scope or after? If its before scope, you'll be able to find a Rem 700 for that much if you watch the sales.

And dont be afraid to buy used. A well looked after 25 year old Winchester Model 70, Rem 700, Ruger 77 etc will be a better investment then a brand new budget quality gun.

The Savage model 11 package rifles are 439 plus tax at cabelas and many other places. I bought one for my younger brother last year for a graduation gift in 30-06 and its a great shooter. It comes with a detach mag and scope, mind you the scope is pretty low quality but on a budget it should work until you get enough money to upgrade. PS Dont Buy The POS 770.

$500 with a scope, I've been searching everywhere for a used one but haven't had much luck

You can buy the savage 111 package (detachable box mag) rifle for 399.00 to 439.00 ...comes with rifle, bases, rings, scope and sling. Check with the sponsors on this forum....someone usually has a deal on them.
Cheers and good hunting!

I played with a couple at the gun store and could swear they were different lengths. I had a 223 and a 270 or 30.06 (can't remember) and the draw was different. I could have been playing with 11fcns rifles though, but the Axis is pretty recognizable.

The savage package rifles are actually decent shooting guns, as long as you step up from the axis. I'd go that route if you could.

For caliber selection, the .30-06 is going to do pretty much everything that the .300 WM will do, albeit at a lower cost. Unless you need the extra velocity or range, stick with the '06.

Remington 770 is the worst firearm currently in production.

You could do well with a Weatherby Vanguard ($330) and then get the Detachable Box Mag kit for it if you wish.

Or maybe a savage 111 package for $380.

Regarding cartridge choice:

I have a 270, 30'06 and 300wm.

The 300wm is beyond what the average shooter can practice with and not develop a flinch whether they realize it or not.

I don't recommend it.

I find the 270 and 30'06 to be much better in this regard.
