You have to pick a rifle chambered in one, which do you choose?

303 British...but in a Ruger No1

Yeah, I find myself agreeing with Bartell... A single shot action would be perfect for a rimmed ctg like the Brit...

Nothing against the .303 cartridge, but I HATE Enfields.... Ugliest military rifles made... I would sooner hunt with a spear!!! (ok, y'all don't flame me ... ok?!)

.303 in a Ruger #1.... Homey would be down with dat.

BTW: a 30-30 loaded in a Ruger #1 is no slouch either!!!!! Can load up with higher pressures and use Spitzers!

I started with a 303 as many older guys did. It still gets used once in a while. For a few years i had a 30-30 in an H7R break action. I loaded 130 gr Hornady spire points at somewhat over pressure loads. Never did chrony them but they were excellent for open country or short range. Note being a single shot the 130's were fine in the H&R.

Have I mentioned this before?

A pal o f mine has a Ruger #1 in 303 British.

He blew the original 7x57 barrel shooting it with a mud plug in it and had a new barrel put on.

I won't flame you...just kick your @$$ ;)

The two best hunting rifles I'm aware of that were chambered in these cartridges were the Savage 99 in 30-30, and the Winchester 1895 in .303 British. My choice would be the .303 because of the greater performance potential.

If I were forced to pick a bolt action, it would be the M10 Ross, and if forced to take a boring old lift bolt, it would be the P14. A bolt action 30-30 would make a great jack handle.
