300 Fireball AR15 (Brass forming - post #150)

Yeah, I know - we haven't played with yardie's since almost a month ago though, so it's not like we haven't been able to problem-solve with a ton of active effort...

All I know is mine works like a charm, so I got my money's worth! ;)

Took mine out today and it began to stick cases in the feed cycle. I pulled out my handy dandy cleaning kit and swabbed out the chamber. After that it ran like a champ. I am getting the feeling these guns are sensitive to dirt.

Anyway, more importantly I have some load data for you fellers stuck with the 1:10 barrels.

150gr pulled mil bullet 10.7gr H322 = 859 fps. The gun cycled reliably and locked back reliably. Felt recoil was very soft as you might imagine with such a low velocity.

I think 11.2gr would probably get us into the 950 fps range.

If it ran reliably at 859 fps it should be nearly perfect at 950 fps. And those 150gr pulled mil bullets are both cheap and easy to stabilize.

Thanks S!

Will have to dabble in and around that load data...

...when I have free time of course...!

Had a boo over at QB forum there and made note of the true trim to length. Would seem more than a few peeps out there were under the wrong impression.

If I remember correctly, the few cases (once fired) I measured averaged (roughly) 1.360"...

...this is going to be fun...

...thankfully, there is Ketel One!!

:D

I measured and spec'd mine such that anything over 1.350" got trimmed down to that length... what'd you find over at QB, yardie?

Also, I'm stoked to hear that H322 works well with the 150's - it was one of the powders (along with VV N120 and N130) that I WANTED to test, and THOUGHT would work well, but couldn't FIND!

Now to find some... because W296 and Lil' Gun just aren't spitting out cases reliably with anything under 180 grains. Lots of 150's handy, and can get more at the drop of a hat from multiple sources, but just couldn't run 'em with the 3 powders I'd tested initially.

I had actually considered trying something even as slow as Varget or IMR4064 just to go 'ridiculously slow' and see what the pressure curve/action cycle did... but I'm glad my initial thoughts on going to the H322 range or the VV N120-130 range were good enough.

If only I could have found some at that time... but if H322 is at ATRS for sale now, that's a gamechanger! Is that what you're saying? This is a 'for sale by ATRS' case of H322, correct?

-M

Yes, it just walked in with our powder order. We also have a case of H335 but I'm not sure where that falls in the burning rate scale.

335 is right in H4895's wheelhouse... just a hair faster, not even really noticeably so.

Slower than BL-C2 by a bit, and just a bit faster than Reloder 12. It's right in that group from BL-C2 to Varget that guys like me use for .308 Win, but it's on the upper end of the scale. Lots of guys just use it like BL-C2 and have great results.

It's saying that the true 'trim to' is 1.355"...

...I'm now second guessing my recollection of what mine where averaging out to...

...I was in the military for 15 years...

...I drank for all of those 15 years...

...a LOT...

...plus I'm quite sure Aluminum Pot Syndrome is kicking in...!

:p

Hahahaha... well then. Time for a friendly neighborhood caliper-fest, it seems! :)

I always over-trim mine by a few thou UNDER the 'minimum' because I HATE trimming after every resizing... and unless it's ammo designed to be wicked-accurate, I don't find a few more thou of neck length makes a massive difference.

But yours still had trouble with some of my loads - albeit, not quite as badly IIRC?

Who knows. Trim a dozen WAY back and see where the bear sh*ts in the buckwheat I guess?

Ah yes, the infamous Pot Set Aluminum ..... :)

*nodding* "DON'T drink the IMP water!!!!!"

Riiiiiiiiiiiight...just getting off patrol on (any) winter ex...you really think I'm going to wait for a fresh pot of water to boil for java?!?

Gimme that now...I'll deal with an addled brain, giving the finger to 12yr old kids in McDonald's for no reason whatsoever and sh!tting myself in public while I mash it between my butt cheeks; all the while sitting in my comfy wheel chair wearing a blissful smile later on in life.

I'm very much ok with that!

Yes, I believe I still had some grief with a few of yours...but nothing like with mine!!

We'll have to dedicate an aft to sorting this out and loading up!!

Agreed. I'm going to go to town with my RCBS and drill setup, and get that second batch back 'in spec.'

Serves me right for being lazy and not checking 'em out 100%. Stupid. :ninja:

Lots of this in my future:

oh oh its happening already

What is a better twist to go with 1-8 or 1-10?

I'll put it this way: mine's 1-10 only because at the time the 1-8 blanks were "in limbo" as far as a delivery date.

A 1-8 barrel will do everything the 1-10 will do, and more - the 1-8 is a vastly better choice which allows you to shoot virtually any 30-cal bullet and have it stabilize. With 1-10, you're effectively limited to 180 grains (again, depending on bullet shape) or a VERY stubby 200-grainer.

If you have a choice of two barrels that are in stock and ready to rock, go 1-8 any day of the week and twice if it's a Sunday. With that said, I have ZERO complaints about my 1-10 with 180-grainers. Surprisingly accurate with subsonic loads.
