308 or 270 for Moose -- which one?

these threads are getting old

you shoot the moose...... the moose dies end of story...... any gun will kill a moose if the shot placement is good.... use what you have as long as you are able to use a 150gr or larger bullet and push it to +2500fps you should be fine.

I would go with what ever rifle you own and if you cant make that choice...
I suggest you go buy a .375 Ruger Alaskan thats for sale on the EE
Because for $3499 you cant go wrong:dancingbanana:
And we all know there is no replacement for displacement :D
PS I hope to get a finders fee Gatehouse if you make the sale.
Say $1800.00?

Has the centurian .30-30 Win. grown too slow to shoot moose with? I daresay not, old chap ;) Let's lower your velocity request to...oh, say 2200fps for .30 caliber 150gr SP bullets then shall we?

No sir, this year the moose will not fall to anything less then a WSM or Ruger Short Mag.....Gone are the days when a moose will fall to a 30/30.

Use whatever one you already own. And BC bigbore is right about the power thing, both of these cartridges are noticeably more powerful than the 30-30, which I consider the yardstick for all these "Can I hunt a "X" with my "insert cartridge here"? Every species on the continent has been killed for about a century with short barreled 30-30's firing factory ammo. Often times cheap factory ammo of unknown origin I might add.

All these threads can be answered the same way - "If your rifle is roughly equal to, or better than, a short barreled 30-30 with cheap factory ammo; AND you can hit your animal where it counts, you can hunt anything in North America with it. END OF STATEMENT.

Ya thats right, this year the moose are all wearing new vests that you will need at least a WSM or Ruger SM to put them down.:dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Anything less and you might as well stay home:runaway::runaway::runaway:

My choice would be the 308, with a good bullet. With todays great bullets, either one is a 300 yard moose cartridge.

Seeing as their are over 160 replies in the first 1/2 page of this forum regarding a suitable moose rifle, I'm gonna throw in the 7.62x39 as a do it all moose slayer.:D

welcome to cgn

bullet placement is more important the cartridge selection.

BUT, it is important to match cartridge to game as well.

both of those are proven moose killers. Bring the one you don't mind getting scratched and beaten up.
