.308 reccomendation

Since you are moose hunting, why not try a 7600 in 30/06 with heavier bullets? You'll find it handles much like your 742.

Looks like you've got the 308 covered already.
 
I get wanting to stick with the same caliber in a different platform... the idea has merit... but the X7 et al ain't it (IMO)... twer it me, I would keep your choice in the sevens....

I didn't say the X7 was the best choice, but merely suggested that it wasn't a bad choice among the entry level offerings.

Maybe a thumbhole stock on an X7 would change your mind. :)

Maybe a 2X4 on a 742 would be the best option, eh?
 
Watch the EE, and get a nice older husqvarna carbine. I got one off there a couple years ago, beautiful little rifle. The trigger on mine is not adjustable, but can be worked on a bit. Shoots right around moa very consistently with WW factory.
 
X7 is an Excellent choice among the entry level rifles. Lightweight, cost efective, actually has a recoil lug, and the best tupperware at that price point.

my local gun store is pricing one out for me, I assume from the canadian distributor.

They are not an entry level rifle so I am not sure what you expect the price to be? I have bought steyr rifles before in canada and the pricing was in line with euro price lists after conversion and removal of VAT
 
On thing to be aware of with the 308 is the twist, especially if you want to use lighter bullet weights since it varies quite a lot between manufacturers. A one in eleven twist is used by Sako and Tikka, while a one in twelve twist is used by Browning and Winchester. In the case of the majority of the other manufacturers it is a one in ten twist which works better for heavier bullets. In the case of Remington it is a one in ten twist for most 308 rifles, however the LTR uses a one in twelve twist and I believe some of the custom shop rifles come with a one in fourteen twist.
 
OP what caliber are you planning to use for moose? Are you staying with .308? Are you up-gunning? Do you want to stay in the .308 family or try a different caliber? 30/06 was suggested but I might be tempted to go .35 Whelen if based on the /06 cartridge. Do you reload?

Budget wise a Remington 700 would be good choice. Same with the Tikka T3 in .308 (or 6.5mm Swedish) As recommended a Ruger 77 would be a nice choice too.

If up-gunning and you reload; and wanting to stay in the .308 family, there was a Ruger 77 in .358 Win on the EE a while back. Might still be around.

Sticking with the .308 win. Love the calibre. I've had a lot of rifles, in lots of calibres. I narrowed it down before I even posted. Just wanted to see what you guys think. I'm either going to go with an m77, rem 700, or a browning a-bolt. I don't really need one, but do prefer a bolt at times.
