When I first read the recipe I thought it was too light a powder charge. That said one cannot argue with such a nice group.

I am going to try your load.

Since I enjoy .308 a lot, I guess I will play.

Very nice shooting. Almost identical load that my cobbled together Rem 700 5R likes. However yours shoots it better than mine.

reduced load (with thanks to Ganderite.)

In my 18.5" M305:

30gr of IMR4895
150gr flat based bullet (I've used Speer Hot-Cor and Hornady Interlock)
prepped surplus brass, CCI BR2 primers
OAL: 2.80"

At 100 yds, best groups were 1 3/8" across using a scope. Using a Bushnell TR25, I got 1 5/8" once I got it zeroed in.

Recoil is negligible, and the action cycles, throwing the brass forward at 2 o'clock. It's fun to shoot a 30 cal rifle without wearing a recoil pad or needing one. This is easier on the shoulder, easier on the powder, and should be easier on the brass.

Action: Remington 700 5R Stainless,
Barrel: IBI, Stainless, M24 profile,
Barrel length and twist: 24'' 1:10 5R
Projectile brand, model and weight: Hornady A-Max 168gr
Powder brand and weight: 43gr Varget
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX: Hot-ish for surplus brass...
Primers: CCI #200
Coal:
Ogive length: 2.218
Brass: Lake City Surplus
Brass length: 2.005''
Distance to lands: 10 thou
Velocity (average): no clue yet

200 meter groups, front bipod and small rear sand bag. I've been getting consistent 1/2 MOA groups at 200 meters. And I should also point out that I'm using surplus brass for my loads.

Interesting info, I am surprised there is not more posts

Caliber: 308
Rifle brand: norinco M305
Rifle Model: M14
Custom built: epoxy bedded usgi fiberglass + unitized system + steel CASM
Barrel length and twist: 22''
Projectile brand, model and weight: Barnes TTSX 150 gr
Powder brand and weight: Varget 45.6 gr
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX: yes
Primers:cci200
Coal: Max lenght for mag
Ogive length: pretty long for a 150
Brass: win 308
Brass length: no idea
Distance to lands: no idea

This is the single best load for my M14, at 1.25 to 1.5 '' fairly consistently, with the odd 1''

It does better than hornady and speer match 168, speer 165 SP, hornady 150 fmj... they fit the magazine pretty tighlty and the load gets compressed seating any deeper, I beleive I am close to max load.

U]When the recipe is HOT (close or above recommended amount of powder), work your way up to it. [/U]

Woah woah woah... stop.

That's contrary to the most basic of reloading safety practices. ALL loads MUST be worked up from published data. The data here should be nothing more than a suggestion of what to try, FROM PUBLISHED DATA. Even then, cross referencing a load between as many published sources as possible is good practice. You also need to work up again after changing lots of any component.

That statement is plain wrong, and dangerous. There are loads listed here as "not hot or close to max" which are over the powder manufacturer's max load, or significantly under the published minimum start load with a slow powder. Combining those loads with the above statement could be disastrous.

Probably because there's not much point to it. As the OP says
We all know that something that does wonders in someone's rifle may not work in someone else's rifle even if it is the exact same thing only a few different serial number away.

There's literally no point to going off someone else's load data for a different rifle. At best it's useless, at worst it's a waste of time taking you down a road that's a performance dead end. Load development is hardly a mystery - decide what job you want the load to do, pick an appropriate projectile, pick an appropriate powder, brass and primer, and work it up.

TRACER RECIPE
This recipe replicates military ammo.

Caliber: 7.62 x 51
Rifle brand: Norinco
Rifle Model: M305
Custom built: The usual upgrades
Barrel length and twist: 22"
Projectile brand, model and weight: surplus 147 grain pulled tracer, unknown origin
Powder brand and weight: Hodgdon BL-C(2) 45.5 grains
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX: no, tested all the way to 47.5 grains with no issues other than a sharp recoil
Primers: CCI 34
Coal: 2.800
Ogive length:
Brass: Lake City surplus 1X fired
Brass length: 2.005
Distance to lands: No idea but feeds well in the magazine and rifle

Results at 100, 200, 300 (whatever is available) over 80% tracer light-off at 45.5 grains, lighting within 100 yards and burning bright well beyond 600 yards. Results worsen with heavier loads to about 25% light-off at 47.5 grains

If available:
Velocity (average): around 2500 fps @ 45.5 grains
Outside temperature:
Wind and direction:
Barometric pressure and other relevant data:

IMR 4166 from my experience over the last two years works very well in a .308 Win. For example, I have used 42.0 grains of it with Nosler 200 grain Partitions in my Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 rifle and got solid results. 0.7 MOA at 100 yards constantly and with a muzzle velocity of 2505 fps. Very satisfying to see the Partitions group well in my rifle. This will be a great load for moose.

Caliber: 308
Rifle brand: remington 700
Rifle Model: xcr tac
Custom built: no
Barrel length and twist: 26" 1/12"
Projectile brand, model and weight: 190smk hpbt
Powder brand and weight: imr 4064 42 gr
LOAD CONSIDERED HOT OR CLOSE TO MAX: warm
Primers: 210 fed match
Coal: 2.820"
Ogive length:
Brass: fed range brass x1
Brass length: standard trim
Distance to lands: a long ways, more than 0.150"

Results at 100, 200, 300 (whatever is available):
3/4" moa @ 100 yards have consistantly rung various steel from 16"x16" to 10"x6" @1080 yards

Velocity (average): 2600 fps avg. +/- 15
Outside temperature: 15-25c
Wind and direction: depends on day, usually from west n/w 5-20 mph
Barometric pressure and other relevant data: takes a while to travel out there. read somewhere that the 190smk transitions from supersonic to subsonic better than other bullets, i can't prove it but i can hit stuff off yonder. imr 4064 sure burns clean.

Here's a "utility" load that I use in a variety of strong bolt action rifles, with a variety of cases and bullets. Not a specific recipe for most accurate or fastest, just a good load that works reliably well in most anything I have shot it in.

Caliber: 308 Win
Rifle brand: Various including Sauer 202, Sako 85 and Sako L579, Parker Hale M98, Brno ZKK, Rem 700, etc.
Bullet brand, model and weight: Various 165 -170 gr. cup and core bullets including Nosler AB and Partition, Hornady SP and BT, Sierra Match, Lapua D46
Powder brand and weight: Win 748 44-45 gr. depending on brass* - see below!
LOAD CONSIDERED CLOSE TO MAX: YES!
NOTE: work up with your components in your rifle, but I have never had a case where this load was over max pressure with any combination I have used. See note on Federal brass. I have not used military brass, but I suggest Federal load for that. Weigh your cases, cases with similar weight have similar capacity and similar resulting pressure.
Primers: Win LR
Coal: 2.8" SAAMI max. to work in a variety of magazines
Brass: Rem, Win, PPU, Norma loaded at 45 gr. W748, Federal loaded at 44 gr. because of thicker, softer brass.
Brass length: trim if over SAAMI spec
Distance to lands: N/A
Velocity (average): 2600 -2730 fps depending on barrel length.
