.308 win getting bashed in my group

Between .308 and .270, my vote goes for .308. And not only my vote, I own .308 too (I don´t own any .270 and doubt I ever will). Likewise my kid. You can´t go wrong with this splendid cartridge.

Lets see they like the 270 over the 308 cuz it shoots flatter and farther. Then they should love a 7m Rem Mag ask them why they are not using one.

Neither could be used at 300 plus yards without correctly determining range and holdover. So if you can't do that, neither should be used at that range. If you can do that, either will suffice.

The original post plainly stated for whitetail hunting in Manitoba.
In my opinion the 270 would have it, hands down.
"A little flatter shooting---" has been mentioned. Try your 308 side by side with a 270 and 130 grain bullet, at 500 yards or beyond, then tell us what a "little" is.

You've only addressed half of the equation. The cartridge is capable of 500 yards, is the shooter? If you can't confidently make an ethical kill shot(after properly identifying your game) at 500 yards you shouldn't take the shot. According to the TKO system the minimum recommended energy at impact is 1000 ft/lbs for deer. Both cartridges are nearing their limits. The 270 with a 130gr projectile has 55 fps over a comparable 150gr .308. The difference in trajectory at 500 yards is 8 inches lower for .308. An 8 inch miss at 500 yards can be attributed to jerking the trigger, loose mounts, parallax or the cartridge.

I'm with others in this thread. Buy the one you want and learn to be a better hunter.

My oppinion is that there is no super cartridge that breaks the rules of physics, and does things exceptionally better than all the other cartridges. There are those out there that think that specific bullet diameters are somehow magical, and pixies guide them through the air both straighter and flatter; if anyone believes that, I have a few bridges for sale.
What matters for trajectory is initial launch speed, and the bullets ballistic coefficiant. Drop a bullet on the floor, and you will see how fast that bullet actually drops (hint: they all drop the same speed). The faster that you push a bullet forward, the further forward it will go before it hits the ground. let's put this in perspective. All things being equal 100fps more will allow the bullet to travel approximately another 1/4" before it hits.
When the bullet leaves the bore, it is immediately slammed into a wall of air. The more streamlined the bullet is, the more it will be able to overcome the air resistance. To put this in perspective, a .308dia spitzer boat tail with a ballistic coefficient of .452 started at 3000fps will be travelling 2790fps at the 100 yard mark. a .308dia 180gr round nose with a ballistic coefficient of .241 started at 3000fps will be going 2614 at 100 yards. That puts the BT spitzer down 3" at 200 yards, and the RN down 3.6". Does this sound like much?
To further complicate things, when a bullet is launched faster, the initial air resistance that it meets is increased rather expedentially.
This rather long winded post is simply attempting to show that people tend to make mountians out of molehills. Will the 270winchester shoot flatter with a 130gr bullet than a 308win with a 150gr bullet, sure it will. Will you notice the difference at normal hunting ranges; probably not. A .277dia bullet travelling at 300fps with a 100 yard zero drops 11.4" at 300 yards. A 150gr .308dia bullet, started at 2800fps with a 100 yard zero drops 14.6". There will be holdover needed with both in that circumstance., and one is only 3.2" better than the other.

My brother has a 308. I own a 270. The two guns have killed an equal amount of game. So i say buy the gun you like be it what ever caliber.

The .270 is a vintage old round with alot of history behind it being introduced in 1923 where as the .308 is to new to trust having been around only since 1952. ;)

Buy which ever you like best and load it to do what you want.

If you want a 308 get a 308.
The reality is is it will work, but there are slightly better choices available.

In short action I prefer the 260, 270 short mag, 7-08, or 284.
If you don't mid the intermediate range disposition of the 308 then I would go for a 338 Federal or something else with a bigger hole.

In a standard length the performance of the 270, 280, 30-06, and 338/06 are legendary for good reason.

Choosing the 308 is just like choosing an ugly girlfriend while under the influence....I think your friends are pointing you in the right direction here! :D

JK!
Shoot what you want and don't ask the peanut gallery....Its what I do. ;)

for starters, don't get sucked into rediculous arguements and even more rediculous people. If you can't avoid it-shoot some game with your 308 and that should end it.

I have both but I tend to think that the .308 is used in many long range shoots and comes thru with colors. I have not heard as much about the .270 then again a large fraternity use it for sheep and goat hunting which also entails long range shot but in a totally different theater.
Take your pick and learn how to make it perform.

and the 308 is for little boys trying to be men. Real men know better and use a 7mm-08

WRONG!

Real men use a belt fed 30-06 that fires from 250 round belts. :D

Remember, if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, riddle them with bullets. :p

You dont shoot at BRRC do you? Theres a guy there who has one of those that you pictured who I saw shoot off a few thousand rounds one day. To expensive for me :p

Tell the .270 experts to go fly a kite. Use whatever rings your bell. Best thing is to let them blow and rant all they want. Just smile and don't even answer them. Jeez, I've used a .32 Winchester Special for the past few years. I wonder what they would say to that?:p

I've shot deer with all of a .25-06, .270, 7x57, .280, .308, .303, .30-06, and they all fell down about the same. Most of my deer hunting has been done in the 3 prairie provinces with most animals taken @ less than 150 yds in spite of what people believe about long range shots being required at extended ranges.

Hunt the wind and get close enough to ensure proper bullet placement and that's all she wrote.

Nope, wasnt me. I can totally see how you can blast off a few thousand a day though, even in semi.

The key is getting the surplus tracer ammo. It is way cheaper then factory, your looking at $450 per thousand when you find it if you buy bulk. (I have about 3k stached. I was stupid, I didn`t take the other 8k the seller was offering at that price :slap:)

Other then that, reloading really keeps costs from getting too out of hand.

Serious fun. :stirthepot2:
