.308 Winchester Suggestions?

Well I think the first question is, what are you planning on doing with it? Hunting? Long range precision? Competition? etc

Target shooting and maybe some long range precision at some point in the future. After some more research I might have to revise the under $1000.00 budget.

A rifle that has a decent selection of aftermarket parts is optimal, in the event you want to change your synthetic stock to a chassis system, change the barrel, put on a 20MOA scope rail, install a detachable mag kit, etc. From my experience, the Tikka T3, Remington 700 & 783, Ruger American and Savage have lots of aftermarket options out there, with the Howa 1500, Weatherby Vanguard and Mossberg MVP not being far off.

You can get a used heavy barrel Remington 783, Ruger American or Savage 10 series for under $500 used and a decent Vortex or Bushnell scope for the same. Bed the action and you can have a pretty accurate rifle.

Had a T3 and upgraded to a Sako A7 as I found one for good deal. I like the soft tech stock but some don't. It's a really nice handing rifle. Shoots 150 and 180g bullets really well.

Look for older/used European rifles, such as: Sako, BSA, Krico, Tikka. Don't overlook the 30-06 as well. These types of rifles are best quality, much, much much better than modern day rifles.

Under $1k, I would look at a Tikka T3X instinctively. Pretty sure they are going between $900-$1000 for the base model, which is a great rifle and leaves nothing on the table unless your heart was set on walnut and gloss bluing.

I also like the XPR from Winchester, my new .308 is a Stealth model. Pretty decent overall, might save yourself a bit of cash too.

Weatherby Vanguard can also be had in that price range, a bit heavy but nice heavy, good balance. Excellent guns.

Edit: there's some old stock CZ rifles out there as well in .308 - many fans on CGN. Worth checking for sure.

It's not impossible, you just have to adjust your expectations accordingly. You can learn a lot about target shooting with a low budget setup. We do need to know if you're including your optic and/or range and reloading equipment in this budget.

I'm a big fan of getting into a new style of shooting with a cheap and cheerful but sensible rig. Then, after shooting it for a bit you'll have a much better idea of what you want and need from your gear. At that point, you can either upgrade what you have, or sell it at a bit of a loss (or no loss at all if you buy smart) and go with a new platform.

You can waste a huge amount of time trying to get "the right setup" out of the gate. I say don't assume you're going to keep this first purchase, treat it as a learning experience. The most important thing is to start shooting with something sensible. Give us a hard budget number for rifle / optic / reloading / range gear and we'll be able to get you better info.

I’m a big fan of the 308. Easy to get components and easy to get to shoot. Under 1k is tough because you’ll probably get stuck with a plastic stock. Maybe buy something you can upgrade later. Or shop for a used one? My most recents 308’s are a Tikka and model 700 stainless in a laminate stock. Both are very accurate. The model 700 is always a good place to start if you want to upgrade later.

Buckmaster - Where did you get that nice stock on the tikka?

That is a factory Grade 3 Tikka Hunter. They sold them in Canada a few years ago. Originally 2k and only in 308win. Northpro had them for 1600 so I grabbed one. It’s a good shooter that one.
