Thanks for the info Slamfire....the one manual I don't have. Going to be fun developing this load for the .358 and comparing it to the 35 Whelen with the same bullet.

A 310gr would be a good bullet for the 35 Whelen except these typically have a 1:16 twist which won't stabilize it properly like my Remington 7400 autoloader. Winchester got it right with the standard 1:12 twist in the 358.

I also load the Woodleigh 310gr RN SN in my custom 350 Remington Magnum SI [Slamfire Improved ] Remington 798 which was built on a long action for increased cartridge OAL and with a 24" 1:12 barrel, and get a muzzle speed of 2500 fps.

To my mind and in my experience, with the case capacity of the .358 Win there are significant dimimishing returns pushing pills over 250 grains, and eventually I settled on the 225 Partition as my bear round... it was a very good combo with Varget or 748.

There is a point where the scales tip and going heavier is moot... usually governed by case capacity... for me, with the .358 Win that point is at 250 grains... and at 300 grains with the .350 RM... but inspite of this, I have relegated the .358 to deer and BB with 225 Part's and the .350 to moose and GB with 250 Part's... plenty of thump and still have the ability to reach out a bit if necessary.

Rather than flirt with the minimum speed for proper bullet performance, I prefer to launch a bullet balanced to the case capacity. The 225 Part from the .358 Win obviously carries more speed, in fact, more speed at 300 yards than the 310 at 160 yards... but it also carries more energy than your overly bulbous choice, at all distances, a sure sign that you are just trying to get too much from the case. If a 310 is what you will use, just choose a case better suited to launching it... JMO... I know that to be cool in certain crowds the rounder and heavier you go the better... ironically that crowd tends to be "rounder and heavier."

My BLR 358 Win with a 2-7 Redfield scope with Q-Detach rings Loaded with Sierra Game King 225 gr SPBT bullets will put the HURT on anything out to 300 Yards ! jmo RJ

Momentum yes, energy no... did you chrono those numbers? Because a case full of 748 moves the 225 @ 2475 from a 22" Ruger barrel, but I could barely squeak 2050 with a 310.

225 @ 2475;

160 yd - 2144 fps/2297 ft.lb
300 yd - 1871 fps/1748 ft.lb

310 @ 2050

160 yd - 1760 fps/2120 ft.lb
300 yd - 1520 fps/1580 ft.lb

Of course your mileage obviously varies...

No need... if I go to 250's it will be from a Whelen or 350 RM... 270-300's from the 9.3X62 or X74 or .375 H&H... lots of cartridges, no need to push them past their comfort zone.

It would be a Top Choice for Water Buffalo Hunting in the Top End (Northern Territory) especially hunting them off the Floodplains and into the Scrub, Anyone can shoot a Buffalo or 12 on the Floodplain from a Vehicle, but the Real excitement and the ones who understand fair chase and want to be 1 on 1 with their Buffalo, hunt them in the Trees/ Scrub... And that's where a Good bit of Power comes in Handy..

300 grainer in 358 sounds spot on.

for the record, I shot my 100+ on the floodplain, but the others in the Trees, as I had dreamed of doing it.
