44mag or .30-.30 which would you use?

I had a nice big grizzly boar walking dead away from me a few(maybe10)years ago. I was carrying a big boar gun with 400 grain X bullets at 2500fps., I know they would have exited the chest from straight behind. I stalked behind him for a long time figuring at his lumber, he would eventually turn and I would get a side on shot. Well, he didn't, he swung with the road behind a high dirt bank. When I got around the bend he was nowhere to be seen. Strange feeling there to know a big grizzly is watching you looking for him. Anyway, I never did see him again and always have wondered if I should have tried that shot from straight behind. If the equipement is up to it, the Texas heart shot is another way to the vitals. I haven't done it, but I don't see why it's a bad shot.
On a deer hunt a lot of years ago a buddy of mine shot a whitetail on the run. It dropped stone dead on the crack of his 6.5x55. We never found a bullet hole on that deer except a tiny bit of blood coming from it's bum. It sure killed it though.

I know this is off topic but, I'm with blindside....too often when hunting you are in a position to take whatever shot is offered whether it's an animal on the run, a wounded animal, a client's wounded animal, etc. Having a big gun firing a big bullet that won't blow up and offers complete penetration from any angle, gives one the confidence and the right to take the shot....While I am a fan of both cartridges in this topic neither gives me that confidence.

Cas and Ben ... the point is not whether you can or not. Who cares if it's possible? He didn't have to ... he could have waited or got the animal to turn. He chose a risky shot. And hasn't told us why he wouldn't wait. And whether he spread intestines through the body cavity and lost a lot of meat or not. A risky and unnecessary shot. A fluke. Lucky. And he brags about it ... jeez!

Not just hunters read this forum. He's adding another bean to those who are looking for reasons to shut hunting down.

Man knows his equipment the animals go down. When anything I ever do or dont do causes a wounded animal to be left in the bush,or in the case of the deer in question more than maybe one hamburger tops to be ruined come ##### at me. Till then know you stuff inside out so your not as limited.Thankyou for your time in this matter.....THE DUNCE

Thats OK there was a time many decades ago I to would not have attempted it,heard of it,or posted for all to see....Your able to see it the way the antis do because your limited knowledge of arm and round are not that unlike the average anti....That said if you cant run with the big dogs your wise to stay on the porch. Watch the older ones a bit longer before you join. That being the case you'd be wise not to bark either

no body has mentioned yet that the tube capacity of the 44 is 9 rounds in the trapper- 30-30 has only 7- so we've got 2 extra rounds if we need them and 40% more bullet weight

Hey BlindSide...or do you mind if I shorten that to BS...seems more appropriate.

Just spent the last hour reading your posts, educating myself.

That said, I can confidently say that I have forgotten more information pertaining to hunting/firearms than you currently know....so get off your high horse. I would confidently take you on in ANY shooting discipline, with ANY firearm...and would bet the farm on it. Having said that....shooting any animal, regardless of what caliber you feel you need to compensate for your little....um....."pistol", a low pecentage shot like what you are talking should be a LAST resort, not when the deer is completely unaware as to your presence and in all likelyhood will offer a reasonable shot. But then again, I know "premature discharge" is common when it comes to some people.

You like to paint yourself as "the all knowing old guy, who knows his rifle inside out"....but sorry, your mouths writing cheques that your previous 1000 posts can't cash.

First one on my "ignore list", congrats!

A big bullet from bum to chest also makes a poo, bile, urine marinate.

All of the talk so far about damage, poo, etc, etc is for those who dont understand the difference when I say these 3 little words
castmine.gif

They dont kill better or worse. They kill differently.I mentioned cast from the start and some like Casul caught it. The rest are limiting your thoughts to the shock process associated with copper clad lead. Two entirely different animals

Hey wrong way,or do you mind if I shorten that to wrong way as it seems appropriate.....I miss that smilie we had of the guy laughing his a$$ off....Oh my God, wrong way, maybe I shouldnt have mentioned a$$

Well, if you have shot an animal, from back to front, or even from front to back, you have to admit, it makes one hell of a mess.
Even the cast bullet from my 30-30 did.
My excuse for taking the shot?
I had already made a heart shot on the deer. It swapped ends, and was running away.
Found out later that the bum shot was not needed. Deer couldn't have gone more than a couple of bounds more anyway.
For the weekend hunter, smaller calibers tend to be easier to shoot accurately. Although, in the 44 VS 30-30 idea that this thread is based on, there isn't a lot of difference in recoil.

I'm 37 years old and only have set of antlers on the wall, I had the chance to shoot a deer in the ass at least 6 times and I passed on all of them. If I can't make a good shot, lungs, heart, I would rather see him walk away. If I need the meat that bad I would sell a rifle and go to the supermarket.
I will be using the 44mag this fall with the 270 in the truck in case I change my mind and watch some logging roads. Thanks guys

Keep the weekend /recoil sensitive shooters( I wont dignify them with the title hunters) out of the bush. I've watched them do more wounding than I've ever dreamed was possible...Ya out at the range a weekend or two before the hunt with their bidismal hunk of iron hurling lead around. So they sit armed with their crap and lack of ability waiting for the shot they've been told to wait for. I'm at one with gun and load. The price I was willing to pay to aquire that ability all year long has earned me the right to take WHATEVER shot I'm compitent in taking..And I will continue to do so.....Hey Captonion drop me a line I'll buy coffee
