Serious question from someone who is looking at 45-70, but hasn't taken the plunge : how much more significant is the recoil compared to either 30.06 or a full powered 12 Gauge slug ?

Would you recommend a shoulder pad for bench shooting ?

A factory 405 grain load would have recoil similar to a .308 Winchester. Someone really needs to instruct the OP how to shoulder a rifle.

I have military service way back in the FN days...piles of 12ga experience (except I haven't fired slugs in a long time so my memory is faded), and shoot .308 regularly...I have also owned several milsurps...No 30-06 experience though....My wife lets me shoot her pre-64 94 in 32Spl and up until now that was the sharpest recoiling rifle I have ever shot...But Sweet Baby Jesus this thing is pretty mean with the crescent butt...perhaps some of the nay-sayers have never experienced one...

Some guns will beat you up a bit especialliy if they are light or have a metal curved buttplate, the Ruger no 3 in 45/70 comes to mind.Shooting the 45/70 even with factory loads in the Ruger no 3 is not a pleasant experience

Are not the Remington loads rated for level 1( under 30kpsl). Imagine what it would look like for a ruger#1(62kpsl) load. The metal crescent is really bad for recoil with 16”brl model. I did get a leather pad with recoil pad installed On mine as was bushing Barnes 250g to 2350fps and that was snappy recoil

Did you get in a car accident on the way home from the range? Stumble into a Rugby match? Insult Connor McGreggor’s mother?

That is some mighty abnormal bruising...

What position were you shooting in? I’m trying imagine a position that would cause bruising like that... Maybe shooting from a bench, with the butt resting on a block, and the recoil was driving the block back into your bicep? That’s weird man.

I shoot a 4570 double rifle thats based on a shotgun frame of which i also own so its the closest comparison of 4570 vs 12ga. I load 405gr bullets to 1600fps which is the upper end loading for low pressure guns. A 1 1/8oz factory slug has more recoil than my loads. Stepoing up to factory levereverultion hornady 4570 loads recoil feels about the same as a hot loaded slug from a 12ga.
As you load higher pressures in the 4570 it will definitely feel sharper and harder recoil.
I have yet to shoot a 4570 load that woukd compare to a 2oz 12ga turkey load though. Those to me feel like my 458wm territory of recoil
Bicep brusing is from not holding the rifle correctly. You dont bruise where you dont get hit. The 4570 is an easy rifle to master even though at ruger #1 loads it does generate alot of recoil

Op, are you left eye dominant?

I’m sitting in my gun room here trying to shoulder a rifle in such a way as to get kicked that far down. If I try to look through the scope with my left eye, I find there’s a tendency to push the butt out past my shoulder onto my bicep. I’m just spitballin here.

Yes, I was seated at the bench...butt on a rear wedge but I don’t think it hit my bicep...as I have reiterated, I know how to shoulder a rifle and the butt was square and sure into the hollow of my shoulder...as someone else pointed out, bruising can occur some distance from the trauma...and, as I have noted, my shoulder did not have a mark...
