Serious question from someone who is looking at 45-70, but hasn't taken the plunge : how much more significant is the recoil compared to either 30.06 or a full powered 12 Gauge slug ?
Would you recommend a shoulder pad for bench shooting ?

A factory 405 grain load would have recoil similar to a .308 Winchester. Someone really needs to instruct the OP how to shoulder a rifle.
Maybe on the moon

Did you get in a car accident on the way home from the range? Stumble into a Rugby match? Insult Connor McGreggor’s mother?
That is some mighty abnormal bruising...
What position were you shooting in? I’m trying imagine a position that would cause bruising like that... Maybe shooting from a bench, with the butt resting on a block, and the recoil was driving the block back into your bicep? That’s weird man.
I don’t have any fancy formulas to figure this out but my shoulder definitely disagrees.
