Well I shot the pig this weekend. Initial impressions..
-Recoil is less than a 12 gauge and is a nice firm push, no snap.
-Not to much muzzle blast so it doesnt shake your teeth, which is nice
-factory pad is a mushy hunk of #### which is hard on the shoulder
-factory sites, white front post is dark and hard to see, rear blade is poor- site upgrade probably a good idea
-Action and lever nice and smooth, I worked it in and added abit of TW25 to it
-Rifle has a nice balance and is compact
All in all, Im happy with the purchase.

I put a Williams fiber optic sight on mine. Helps quite a bit. Now that I finally found out what the part number is for the Marlin "cut away" front sight hood, I will be ordering one to replace the original, so more light reaches the sight.
Once you start reloading for that guide rifle she ain't gonna feel like a 12 gauge for long. Most factory loads I've shot were pathetically weak in comparison to what you're going to reload to......unless you like the powder puff loads.

I figure I can handle double the load of the factory I shot no problem. But the factory pad has to go. Its the first time in a long time Ive had a sore shoulder. Odd being as the recoil seemed reasonable and alot less than a 12 gauge with 2 3/4s and far far less than 3 inch slugs. Muzzle blast was nothing either. The factory pad is like a brick.
I just orderd Wild West trigger and Williams sites for it and a few other things. Also got some hand loading books to finally start reloading- figured I would start with the big gun first.

You can also get a happy trigger to replace the sloppy marlin trigger from Brownell's.

I have an 1895GS that I bought that was all bubba'd up. Peep sight, scout rail, fiber front sight, handgun scope, and the stock was, well lets say it had character, some-one elses.
I have searched high and low for the parts to rebuild it, found factory sights, happy trigger, bear proof extractor, new stock, one piece stainless leupold base with quick release stainless leupold rings, and a leupold vx111 4x8x36 silver scope. I just need new recoil pad. It is going to be stripped, polished, buffed and re-assembled to be better than new.
When done, all of the old parts will be on the EE for some-one else to bubba up theirs...

Here's mine setup for field work, remote bush camps and rainy day hunting (without the light). Mods include Wild West Happy trigger, ejector, metal follower, light mount with a TLR-1 LED light, qhost ring sight, Williams Firesite and cutaway hood, Decellerator recoil pad, Xcellerator sling.

Well, welcome to a fun gun & good caliber to shoot. I don't have a guide gun, just the plain 1895 but I am going to pick up a shorty eventually.
You will have to reload to get optimum performance but that means you can brew light loads for cheaper range days.
Lots of good accessories mentioned here...I would go for the sights first on my next one.

It's made by Wild West so maybe Cabela's or that BC dealer in Fort St. John.
You have to loosen the magazine to remove it. My lights (M3 and TLR-1) just clip on and off so when I hunt with it I take the light off and leave the mount in place.
H322 is the best powder that I have ever found for the 45-70 cartridge burns clean and is not effected by heat/cold after using almost every possible powder that can be used in the 45-70 I now only use H322 for all bullet weights.

What williams firesight do you need for the front? I have a peep sight on the back already but that white blade is no good.

I'm not sure, it's a red pipe style Williams sight. It comes as part of the Wild West ghost ring package.

Been dere, done dat. Flashlght in the left hand trying to maintain alignment with your shotgun, while trying to aim at the bear trashing your pitch black kitchen tent while trying to make sure no one's on the other side of the bear.
The mounted light is the intelligent solution.
my 1800fps 405Grain hard cast's kick a lot harder than a 12Gauge or any 375 H&H I've shot "this is not bragging i wish it wasn't so cuz id get to shoot more rounds before i lost feeling in my arm"
now the lever evolution rounds that i played with last year were a nice round .. shot pretty darn good for not being tailored hand loads and id recommend them so someone who doesn't want to hand load rounds.
one of my favorite target plunking rounds was the black powder rounds I've played with.. Smokey but fun and my arm didn't stop working afterword's
I think if your going 1700+ fps with a 400+ grain Bullet the pad might not be up to snuff for sustainable shooting .. at least off a bench leaning into the rifle that is , im a pretty big guy and it gives me a soar arm after 15 or so rounds fired.

I too must have one of these rifles someday.
My buddy just got one and I can't wait to try it out-- 45/70 very, very cool... very, very big holes.
I'm thinking just as good or better than 12G slugs for bear defense.
First time I tried mine was with a few buddies, and we were all shooting our hunting rifles at targets around 65yrds. I hit dead center on the target on my first shot, but at first I was more in awe of the dam huge hole, and how easily I could see it on the target, than I was with its accuracy LOL
