475/416 Rigby

You might want to consider the .475 A &M Magnum, similar to what you're looking for but brass may be more avail. and I know someone who has a reamer for that thumper. This wildcat goes back to the 50s and i don't understand why it is not more popular.

great writeup on this cartridge in a recent rifleshooter mag (may/june 08).
Jon R Sundra got the 416 JRS going using published 416 Rem mag starting loads and working up, as he found case capacity to the base of the neck to be the same in the two rounds.

One load he used was a 400 gr Hornady Soft Point , 75 grs of RL15 and was getting 2405 fps. The other load he published was a 350 gr barnes TripleShock on top of 75.5 grs RL15 at 2,570

Oh ####, i just re-read the post title and your looking for a wildcat off of the 416 Rigby. Oh well, theres numbers for a 416 Ruger above, lol.

Yup I've shot the beast a few times.
It's a whole other world more recoil than the 416 Rigby, but nothing like the 500 A Square (.510/460Wby).

There is a guy living in Sechelt that developed a 475/416 Rigby. He calls it the 470 Mbogo...He even has his own head stamp made.

As an African dangerous game cartridge it might be one of the best balanced all around heavy hitters. Dave took the rifles to Africa and bumped off a few cape buffalo.....It's a fairly authoritive round!
Bullets are easy to get too....No Funky 50 cal stuff.
The round pushes 500 grain bullets at up to 2600fps!

Here's the 475 Mbogo website. You'll find it very well thought through and entertaining. There is everything from penetration tests to rapid fire videos. The author (Dave Estergaard) handles his big bores very well...As you will see in the videos.

I have emailed Dave a few times on another monster I built....It's been a few years, but I'm pretty sure Dave would enjoy helping you out(his email is on the first page of the site).

If you were interested in the cartridge before you will go right off the deep end after reading Dave's site!

Have fun! :D :D

It fits in a Brno 602/550 or any other magnum action.

It is identical to the A&M (Atkinson and Market) except it has no belt.....A good thing.

Oh ya! The 460Wby is for girls!

475 mag.

Well I picked up the rifle. Hell of a deal. Its a win. model 70, tight grain heavy barrel built by D.Jennings. Cant weight to set it off this weekend.

Hi Gents
Just to clarify a couple of things. The 475 A&M and the 475/416 Rigby are just a necked up 460 Weatherby case and a necked up 416 Rigby case with everything else being the same. The 470 Mbogo case is quite a bit longer and the taper has been taken out of the case. The idea behind the case was to shoot a 500 grain bullet at 2500 fps at a moderate pressure so temperature would never become a problem with loads in Africa or any other hot climate. Some people have loaded 500 grain bullets to 2695 but that is not the idea behind it. Just be real careful loading your 475 A&M. You should be able to safely use 460 Weatherby data for starters due to the larger bore size which should drop your pressures a bit. Start back 5 or 8 grains and work up from there. What ever you do, do not use the Cartridges of the World data. It is very unrealistic and dangerous. I don't know why after all these years they haven't changed those weird velocity tables. There are pictures up on my website that show the 416 Rigby 470 Mbogo and the 450 Rigby together. The 450 Rigby is basically a beltless 460 Weatherby. Thanks for the kind words about my site and cartridge. Hope you have lots of fun shooting your new gun.
Take good care,
Dave

If the 460 WBY is for girls I better go and get my hair and nails done today. Care to come and try my 460 WBY built on a ruger #1 action off the bench?? I will even pay for the ammo but not the medical bills after...:slap:

What sort of recoil pad do you have on your 460 Weatherby? The Ruger #1's do have a tendency to kick a bit harder because of the stocks. You can make it a lot better using the F990 recoil pad that's made be Pachmayr. Here is a link to the pad if your interested, http://www.lymanproducts.com/pachmayr/ .
Take good care,
Dave

You got me there icehunter! The 460 in a number one is a foul thing indeed! I thought about doing it a few times just for fun, but was talked out of it by guys that had actually shot the beast!

I was referring to a stock Wby rifle...Trust me here...The 475 is a fair bit more gun!

Hey Dave!

You still shooting big bores?
I was surprised to see that your site was still up and running...It's been a long time!

I'm still shooting big bores and there is quite a bit of interest in the cartridge. There has been a few magazine article on the 470 Mbogo one is in a German magazine called Calibre so I'm still looking for a translation on that one. There are quite a few rifles that have been chambered for the 470 also. Two have been to Africa and a third one is going this coming year. Besides the ones that have been built in the States there is one fellow in Australia that is building a real beauty. I keep the site up because of all the big bore information and the number of people that visit it. Take good care,
Dave

I went to your website Dave and found it truly interesting, I read the whole darned thing. I figured this cannon is definitely out of my league, 'cause I'm a shrimp to most normal not vertically challenged people . But, judging by your picture, you sure don't seem all that huge either. Apparently the size of the man has nothing to do with how he can manage such recoil. Well done.

The gunsmith lives close by so I can ask him. Did Winchester never have a 416 rigby in the model 70? I do know that the barrel is custom.
