.50 Beowulf 3rd Party Magazines

Sad news everyone...

I'm affraid this project will not be leaving the prototype phase. The RCMP have deemed our .50 Beowulf magazine as a "dual use" magazine because both .50 Beowulf and .223 Remington cartridges fit in it. Our hands are a bit tied on this one because despite changing the feedlips in our design to optimize cycling .50 beowulf, .223 cartridges still fit in the mag, and will essentially always fit in the magazine due to the shape of the .50 Beowulf cartridge and the limitations on magazine shape imposed by the lower receiver of an AR15 rifle, which was designed for the .223 Remington/5.56x45mm cartridge(s).

Please note that this statement only affects Northern Republic Magazine's .50 Beowulf submission to the RCMP. I cannot comment on other designs, including OEM Alexander Arms magazines.

Not really surprised, but also not really legal.

Not to mention this contradicts existing information on their own website.

Have to see where this goes regarding other products and the practices already taking place.

Any option for you to challenge?

I plan to purchase a ar15 upper in .50 beowolf.... just hope the magazine will be available for real .50 upper owner !!!

Dual use? WTF does that even mean? Is your magazine different than the original AA Beowulf mag? If not, it does not bode well for the future of any Beowulf mag. If they can deem your magazine "dual use", what's to stop them from applying the exact same judgement on the others? Are they going to tell me a 40 S&W is dual use in my 9mm? This is such horseballs.

Your questions were similar to mine. Basically, our current gun laws are a convoluted mess of vague rules, opinions and conflicting precendences. Honestly, if we took this to court, we'd probably just cause a situation that would be even worse for gun owners. If people want to make changes to the firearms act right now, it would appear that they would need to start and end in the PMO with a new law being whipped through the House.

Again, I can't comment to other makes and models of magazines, because we didn't submit those for RCMP review.

Did they indicate if they were going to make a move on any other magazines that might be classes as "dual-use" or if they were going to attempt to criminalize using ammunition in a magazine of a caliber different from which the magazine is marked?

I didn't get a straight answer on this. They gave an indication that they would be pursuing all magazines that have been falsely claimed to be .50 Beowulf magazines, which were viewed as really being .223/5.56 mags with a different label (This didn't include OEM Alexander Arms mags as of what I was told today), but when asked about the difference between our submission and the 9mm vs .40SW handgun magazine ruling they already made, they said that was different and that those magazines were not the same.
