597 VTR - mini review + pics.

The distributor for Remington Canada sent me a new 597 replacement, and I received it today in the mail....Range report coming soon. I must give the Gravel Agency credit for its quick response to the issue, and the Dealer where I bought it for keeping me informed as to the status of the entire issue.

Include targets! :p

Al Simmons is a great store hands down, you pay a bit more sometimes, but everyone has to make a living, were all thrifty here, he's a good guy and I rather put some money in his pocket rather than some FOB.

Here we go again....TAKE TWO....

I received the replacement 597 from the Canadian Distributor on Friday.
I just got back from the range with it. Right out of the box.
It was cold, windy and raining, but I had to try it out.
Ammo used was Winchester Xpert, Remington cyclone, Yellow Jackets, Blazer.
I put a cheap NcStar 4x30 scope on it, and did a really quick sight in with four rounds onto another target.
I mixed the ammo up randomly in a larger box, and used both a 30 round and the 10 round magazine.
I had two FTF...and two FTE, one each from the Blazer ammo, and the Xpert ammo.

Other than not sighting the scope in very well, and the miserable weather conditions,

I am betting the group will tighten up when the scope is dialed in properly, and if it was bench rested too.
The upside is, everything worked according to plan....Nothing to complain about at all.
Tomorrow I will dial in the scope more accurately , bench rest it and re group for 100M.

It sounds like everyone seems to like these rifles.I have been thinking about buying one also, but what causes the feeding problems with various types of ammo?

Probably the mags, which are really friggin tight from the factory. I have flawless feeding (with standard velocity LRN ammo...haven't tried my high velocity hollowpoints) when I only load 8...sometimes I squeeze in 9, but I never even bother trying for the full 10 rounds. At least not with my relatively-new mags.

There was also an older generation of mags that had major issues right from the beginning, but anyone who has bought a 597 in the last two years or so should have the most recent revision of the mags.

The magazines are a PITA for getting in 10, yes. I loaded 9 mostly.
The Remington 30 round mag has plastic feed lips....I was wondering if there was an aftermarket mag with steel lips?

I picked one up yesterday.
I like it. Feels really solid, definitely not "toyish". The trigger assembly does have a little wiggle though.
Brought it home and put on the Leupold rings (high) that I got for it. Took the Nikon 4-7X40 (50 yd parallax) scope off my 10/22 and put it on the VTR.
Made a sling for it out of 1" mountaineering webbing and buckles, and put it on with some Talon sling swivels.
I'll take it out next weekend and see how it does.

3rd generation, yes....;)

Distance? :yingyang:

Right, I should've been more specific. 1st gen had a lot of problems, 2nd gen was slightly better, and 3rd gen are the current mags which seem to work fine (aside from the tightness when new). The 3rd gen mags are identifiable by the number 10 enclosed in a circle on the side.

As far as the 30-rounders go, I have one but have yet to try it.

I spent the day at home today on doctors orders, I got an ear infection. So, doped up on Empracet and with nothing better to do, I took apart my VTR to see how it was put together.
The manual gives you step by step disassembly/reassembly instructions specific to the VTR.
- There is a rubber bushing between the barrel shroud and the barrel, just forward of the receiver. I don't know if it was put there for a reason, but, if you remove the shroud/bushing, you will likely Not be able to get it back on. I tried for something like an hour but gave up and just reinstalled the shroud without the bushing. If it shoots like crap, I will assume that it needs the bushing as a harmonic damper or something, and try to figure out how to get it back on.

-The trigger assembly had some side to side play when I got it. This was rectified with some aluminium duct tape. I cut some strips 1/4" wide and ~3" long and put them on both sides of the assembly where it sits inside the receiver. It's now nice and tight.

-Aside from the barrel shroud, the gun is a pleasure to work on.
