597 VTR - mini review + pics.

Is there even a benefit to replacing a stock extractor that's working? Mine works flawlessly so I find it difficult to justify spending the coin on a Volquartsen extractor.

The hammer, on the other hand...that stock trigger pull sure could use some lightening. I'm probably gonna order one of those soon.
 
Is the fore end tube thing drilled and tapped? Was wondering if one could put rails on it for say a front grip and possibly some BUIS. If the new ruger sr-22 comes up here I'd be torn between them...and like I wasn't having enough trouble trying to decide between the stock 10/22 and 597 @.@

Here was the answer I was given to the exact same question to Volquartsen yesterday....
"We have had some customers have very good luck with the factory extractor so my recommendation would be to try it out first and if you have any stovepiping issues I would then look at an replacement extractor."

I hope my 597 doesn't have any issues.
 
The good news is...that the extractors are inexpensive. About 10 bucks, and available almost everywhere.
I think it is not an 597 VTR issue alone, but the entire line of 597's are prone to it.
 
No such extractor issues myself. In fact I was very surprised to find that I did not have a single malfunction out of 200 rounds of the ammo I tried (Winchester Super-X T22). The stock mags worked well, but I could never squeeze all 10 rounds into them. Ended up denting a round trying to force it in, so I gave up on loading them to their max capacity.

But yeah, the extractors are cheap and I'll probably order a spare one when I get the hammer.
 
Update....
It was not an extractor issue per se.
It was more a slam-fire, which did not push the brass far enough into the chamber before detonation...causing the extractor itself, the pin and the spring to release and fall out.
I bought new ones anyways, but here are some pics of the casing retracted during repair. notice the double rim, and the side wall blow out....( i KNEW I felt something....good thing for safety glasses!!! )

Personally, I hate having any stovepipes and attempt to do anything I can to avoid their occurrence.....:redface:

Dood... That's cool and scary all at once :eek:
 
I heard the firing noise from it...different for sure...
I felt a piece of the brass speckle my cheek, after it hit the safety glasses.
I ejected the mag and flipped on the safety
I turned the 597 to look at the receiver, and at first glance it appeared closed and fine, but when I tilted back straight, the pin, extractor fall out...thats when I noticed the spring on the bench.
I pulled the bolt back and saw the cartidge, with the hole side facing out.
I closed and opened the bolt a couple of times, foolishly thinking it would grab and eject.
I picked up the pieces and put them in a sealable plastic bag....and left the shell in the chamber.
It was not until I got the firearm back two days later fixed that I got to see the actual damage to the shell.
It now sits proudly on my wall of honor (and shame), tagged as to what happened.

I am going to take it back to the range soon....and try this again.
(Wonder if I should talk Stormbringer in to firing the first few rounds out of it, just to be on the safe side....hehehe :) )
 
I picked one up at Epps 2 weeks ago. Took the A2 stock off and put a Tapco 6 positon...looks cool.
Fired a brick of Win HV and these worked fine with only 3 FTF. Tried CCI stingers but they didnt work well at all, ever 2nd or 3rd round wouldn't fire, the rim was crimped but no go...did i have a bad batch of CCI's or is my firing pin fubar?
 
Got some nice Leupold rings to mount the scope. Still have to sight them in.

Got a couple of 30 round mags, looks really wonky with the big mag and the scope. :p

I'm going to have to look into that volq extractor solution, and perhaps some other solutions to improve shootability depending on the results I get when punching paper with the scope sighted in.

-non-restricted right?
-30 rounds mags non-pinned available?
-and above all worth the price?

I really like the looks of it but I am still a skeptic of 597's... why am I so loyal to Ruger for there 10/22's when it comes to semi's?! an AR stock would look awesome on this gun!

I called Remington....I have to pay to ship it back to a repair depot, (35.00) then get it fixed or replaced at their choice, then they pay to ship it back to me.
WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP...NEVER AGAIN WILL A REMINGTON PRODUCT DARKEN MY DOOR OR TAKE SPACE IN MY GUN CABINET.
NOW LOOKING FOR A 10/22 INSTEAD. :mad: :mad: :mad:

on the Positive side, the Store which I bought it at has been quick to assist me in resolving the issue. :)
we are already in communication, and they are being most helpful.

(1) That's sad....:(......I'm very sorry to hear it came to that......:mad:

(2) Some Remington products are absolutely amazing :cool: (ask if you can get a 552 Speedmaster or the Fieldmaster pump as a swap? :redface:) - the 597 just seems to still be a work-in-process :bangHead:, and may have been sent to the market too soon :nest: (and maybe more than once :pirate: - remember the 1st-gen magazines? :eek:)

Ruger 10/22 in a Nordic, Fab556 or Evolution stock will give you the desired tactical rimfire with a much more proven action and upgrades galore. I'm disappointed to hear this VTR has problems. I really like the look of it and would have considered buying one.
 
To Quote a consulted source on the 597's about my problems:

" Unfortunately, the type of problems you have encountered with your 597 VTR are somewhat indicative of the entire 597 family. From the date these guns were launched there have been extensive reports of feeding and extraction issues however the parts failures and breakages you have described are most definitely excessive and beyond the normal issues we have seen with these guns."

Wish someone had of told me earlier.
