#6 Birdshot vs. Bull Moose

#6 on a moose...no way. Not unless you could put the muzzle right on that eyeball. One might think that given that distance the shot wouldn't spread much therefore act like a slug...but that's just not sound physics. Each pellet acts as an independant mass and wouldnt have the energy of a slug. I would wager that the plastic plug would be more damaging at that range than the pellets.

Very cool story indeed! I woulda pooped my pants.

Ran into a bear one time while hunting birds with a single shot 20 gauge with #7.5 shot. I never even let him get within a fifty yards. I turned and ran through the choppins, leaving my dog in the dust, she turned tail and ran too. I swear for a 180 pound guy and not in great shape, my feet never so much as broke a twig or disturbed a leaf. I litterally flew on tipie toes.

That bird shot would have knocked him on his ass, by the time you pumped 3 of them in his face, he would be done. I am with Tod on the slug deal too, .350 grains of lead would kill pretty much anything.

At 6 to 8' the wad would still be on the shot. I think it would have acted alot like a slug from that distance especially with magnum shot.

At that range you'd have blown his brains to rat snot.
Good excercise in keeping your cool. Congratulations on a hunting experience you'll always remember.
I have had similar experiences with cow moose on occassion. (No tag, and not at all funny)

I'm gonna say the #6 would have blinded him, and you would have had a wounded moose on your hands. And a deaf one, their hearing is better than ours.

But I am waiting in anticipation of 1899's phone book test. If it don't make a hole through the book, it ain't going to kill the moose either.

2¢, please.......

Years ago I worked on the line on a private railroad in Ontario_One spring my track foreman put in a beautiful vegtable garden. One day in June here he is poundin on the door of my bunkhouse yelling about a moosein the garden,I went out and seen about a 2 and a half year old bull rolling around the garden, having a dust bath I guess. We yelled ..till we were blue in the face to no avail.I went and got my 20 guage. When he stood up to see what other part of the garden he could destroy I let him have in the ass from about 75 feet with a load of #7.To this day I've never any animal take off as fast as that one did  I doubt if it did any more than scare the bejesus out of him but he never come back!

I shot like 50 wolverines this summer with my uncle in Alaska. I used a frickin 12 gauge, what would you do in a situation like that? Thanx Napoleon.

Ok, what I want to know is did you piss yourself?!

At 10'ft shooting 3 shotgun blasts into anything's head..... The damn thing is going to be so stunned that he won't be able to fight you let alone chase you. It would be like you taking 3 good cracks over a pro-boxer's head with a baseball bat. Even if you don't kill him, he is not going to be chasing you.

Have you ever shot an old wood door with a 12 gauge at point blank?

I always carry a few slugs or 00 Buck with me... Hey, ya never know.

You are lucky that the moose didn't try and mate with you!!! If you think that a horse has a big ####..... Hung like a moose would be a better expression  You would be walking pretty funny for quite some time!

Good story.
No doubt it wouldhave killed the moose insantly.Back in the day when we butchered our own meat.I saw my father shoot countless cattle at 8'to10' with a 20 guage with bird shot. They all dropped like a sack of #### no second shot needed.I am quite sure some of the cows were bigger thanthe moose you saw.A look at the skulls after decomp there was a 2'' or so entrance hole.

You guys aren't seriously questioning whether this moose would have died or not are you?

A full charge of shot into the eye from the side at eight feet would have dropped that moose on the spot. There would have been no need for a second shot!

Ted

It is rather amusing that some think the shot would not kill the moose at 8 feet. It would likely take a football size chunk out of his noggin, dropping him instantly. The other option could have been to shoot him in the throat. That may not kill him instantly, but it wouldn't be more than a few seconds. At 8 feet from the barrel, the shot would be in a pattern no bigger than the size of a basebal.

Do you have any idea how dangerous a Bull Moose is in Late October :?:
Obviously not or you would have got the hell out of there at the first sound he made.
You made some very bad choices that could have resulted in serious injury or death for you and Bullwinkle.
If that bull had decided to run you over your #6 shot would have been the last thing you heard... not very Sharp... Cnd. :|
