7-08 remington cartridge

pee yew what's that stench......7mm-08, Id take a 7mm-08 over a .308 or 6.5cm any day, great little cartridge, for a short action hunting cartridge using 140gr Accubonds its awesome,

but in the end I say just go 280AI and be done with it !

I have but one rifle in 7mm08. Pretty rare one which most would have never knew was made
Remington 7600 pump with the factory laminated she dies with me
Cheers

My 7mm-08 comes in Winchester Model 70 compact form. A sleeper of a rifle and a sleeper of a cartridge. I’m enjoying factory 120 grain Barnes TTSX. Accuracy and velocity good with the 20” barrel too. Carries like a 30-30. Will have this one for life!

I’ve got the same set up and love it! It’s light and easy to carry and I’ve dropped several black bear and some white tails with the 120 grain Barnes ttx. Will use 140 grain Barnes ttx for elk this fall. Low recoil and light=fun shooting.

I bought my boy a Browning X-bolt micro midas 7-08 for his first hunting rifle. I like it so much I've been using it myself most of the time now for deer. I had never owned or shot a 7-08 till I bought his and I can't believe I waited so long.

Personal preferences are fine, but I seriously doubt that the 7-08 really has much to offer over the other two. All three are very good cartridges.

Your bang on with that SuperCub, kinda like comparing the 30-06 to the 280 or 270, take your pick. The 7-08 is a very efficient cartridge and works better in a short action than the 284win. But i still prefer a 284, jmo :)

they're all good cartridges for SA applications and more than adequate for hunting, my first year hunting I killed three animals with a .308, a bull elk, a bull moose and a mule deer buck, they all died........but I would still take a 6.5 PRC over a 6.5 CM and a 280AI or 7 SAUM over a 7mm-08 and so on, just personal preference

Hazarding a guess that a 284W in a LA is to take advantage of higher BC stuff like ELD/VLD stuff? I'm not familar with the cartridge but interested in a possible build of it or something similar

I have both 7-08 s and 284 s - The 284 Holds 10 + grs more powder so it does have a BIT more POWER then the 7 -08 BUT in a std short action
it works BEST with the 120-140 gr bullets as the seating depth is the limiting factor - only a 100 FPS MAX ! over the 7-08 Really NOT worth the hassle in a short action - can have feed problems with out follower refitting too - BUT your a KOOLER KID if you have a 284 WIN ! jmo RJ

I’ve had 4 different 7/08 barrels now.Going to be ordering a 5th soon.
I’m not sure why folks gravitate towards the 120-140gn projectile range. The 7/08 is perfectly capable of firing 160’s and bigger is better imo.

I like velocity, and 140s go faster without giving up too much in sectional density. That's my reason for favoring 140s.

You are correct, 180 gr berger vld demand a longer action. I'm not into precision shooting, so for me I prefer a short action. The 284 is similar ballistically to a 280 rem.

There are a lot of us 'prairie boys' out here who prefer lighter, faster, flat shooting bullets in a given cartridge for shorter ranges under 500 yards...

The 139 Hornady is another 7mm favorite...

That's what i figured.
If the .284 & .280 are similar, I'll probably have to take a serious look at the .280AI if I want to build out a longer range hunting rig.

Started down the road with one about ten yrs ago. Had a little lighter weight custom put together for me by Bob Galloway here in AB. R700 donor action with a 24" #2 Jury barrel and Wildcat stock so a mostly made in AB rig. I was looking at building something in the .25 to .284 range and Bob suggested this the most practical place to start and just said "give it a chance ... you'll be surprised". It has turned into my fav hunting caliber and I own and have used several over the years. Shoots 140 gr AB's over RL 17 into a near single hole at 2825 fps. Shoots almost any factory 139 - 140 gr to under 3/4 MOA. 120's almost as good and can get them up to 3050 FPS with little tight groups. Easy and fun to shoot, ultra efficient killer and easy on bass and supplies. Perfect starter caliber for the boys. Just a gem of a cartridge for varmints to moose. Thinking of putting another together, mag fed, open sights, 18" barrel. Git one!
