7-08 remington cartridge

There are a lot of us 'prairie boys' out here who prefer lighter, faster, flat shooting bullets in a given cartridge for shorter ranges under 500 yards...

The 139 Hornady is another 7mm favorite...

Fair enough. I’ve been using scopes with turrets so its never been an issue.

I’ve shot a few things with the 139 SST, Interbonds and Interlocks. The SST is still my favourite.

I’ve had 4 different 7/08 barrels now.Going to be ordering a 5th soon.
I’m not sure why folks gravitate towards the 120-140gn projectile range. The 7/08 is perfectly capable of firing 160’s and bigger is better imo.

Heavier bullets require tighter twists. up to 160 work ok in my 1-9 7-08 barrels. Anything heavier, and there are a fair bit more of those these days, and you will require a tighter twist. Been thinking of a 1-7 or so for my next one. - dan

Had very good luck with that bullet on deer, out to distances that I probably shouldn't mention. A favorite. - dan

So, what length seems to be the optimal for 130-140gr range on this Cal?

Barrel length is determined largely on what type of rifle you want and the type of hunting you plan on doing with it.

One could have a 20" carbine or a heavy bbl 26". Two very different rifles with the same chambering.

I bought a 7mm-08 reamer before we saw a rifle. When the first rifles showed up, they were Remington 700 Varmint rifles. Bob Hobbs took one and George Farquharson took the other. George achieved some impressive velocities with his; mostly because he had no fear when it came to selecting a load!
At the same time, I put a Hart, HV taper, barrel on one of Bob Hobbs' Model 70 Target rifles. This rifle shot very well, especially with Sierra 168's, but Bob found it too heavy to shoot prone with a sling. I think it would have been fine for me.
I didn't get around to building my own 7mm-08 until 1985. I barreled a Turkish Mauser and put it into a Brown Precision stock. It was accurate, and easy to carry and it killed everything I shot with it. Like the 7x57, it is suitable for any game one is likely to hunt in north America. Don't currently have a 7mm-08 and, at this point, I probably won't. I still think it is an excellent cartridge though and it would be my second choice for a lightweight, short action, cartridge (no.1 would be a 308).
