Anyone have any real world experience using 7.62x39 for deer? How did you make out?

I am thinking of taking this round afield with some Hornady SST's, shots will be under 100 yards.

I have my CZ527 ready for deer. Ballistics comparable to a 30-30 which has killed millions of deer. As said above go with a hunting bullet and know your limitations of distance and energy it will work just fine on deer.

Loads of people do. Just get soft point hunting ammo. Few guys do SKS but they are either stronger than me, or walk a lot less to their stand.

Hunting deer with my cz 527 in 7.62x39 this year. Three bullets to choose from, Hornady 123 gr sst, Interlock SP 123 gr and Barnes TSX 123gr. My cz 527 is sub MOA with hand loads, and 1-2moa with Barnaul, PPU, and S&B factory ammo. I am confident the 7.62x39 is a good deer round within 100 yards.

Shot a couple white tails with my 16" CZ527. Using PPU soft points.

The SST is probably the best bullet other than the bonded Federal Fusion offering. Stay away from PPU as it acts more like an FMJ. SST will do its part out to 175m.

I shot two whitetails with a Ruger American Ranch. Both were at about 100 yards. I was using PPU 123 grain soft points pushed by CFE Black powder by Hodgson. One bullet went right through on broadside. The other ended up in the flank from a front quartering shot. The recovered bullet expanded perfectly. Velocity was right around 2400 fps. Both deer dropped in their tracks. The Hornady SST would be a good bullet also. No issues with he 7.62x39 on deer out to 150 yards.

I used an SKS on a whitetail doe at about 80 yards with Prvi soft points. It died rapidly with a lung shot. Doesn't take much to kill a deer; just keep impact velocity above the bullet's expansion threshold. Usually about 1800 fps for common cup and core bullets.

I used the Hornady SST factory load to shoot one whitetail buck. Broadside at almost exactly 100m. Good expansion, exit hole, death dash was short.

I shot a 6 pt. buck with my tricked out SKS at around 60 yds. He went about 10 ft. and nosed down, dead as a doornail. I now have a Howa which is very accurate with my handloads. I'm using Hornady SST but I also got some Hornady Z Max which perform much like the SST's in terms of accuracy.

its proberly, realistically, a near perfect "deer" cartridge TBH.... but of course, you should use a 338 win mag

Same as my setup, I slapped a scope on my cz 527 and it's shorter and lighter than my .30-30 so I am thinking it's going to come out for some deer hunting, I have some Hornady Black SST and some Herters SP ammo whatever groups best will get loaded for deer.

It will kill deer if you do your part.

Heck, guys use 30-39 or 243 win all the time.

You can't compare 243 to 7.62x39. I have shot a lot of deer with my 243 and most of them drop faster than with my 7mag. OP I have seen a lot of deer killed with SKS. Just don't stretch the shot too far regardless what you are shooting the bullet out of.

The best bullet is the Barnes 123gr TSX. We've used it on whitetail, black bear, and mule with excellent results. Penetration is so good I would feel confident using it on larger game with careful shot placement and distance.

Looking forward to trying the Carcano in M43 flavor... if of course PP rolls back the 5 round limit. Otherwise... I'll be travelling a lot by Canoe. Lakes, deep lakes...practically bottomless.
