700 SPS Tactical & SPS Varmint

Hmm....I'm just hearing about this rifle for the first time. I was leaning towards an LTR in the future but this sounds to be about the same thing for about $300 less. These are the differences that I can see, let me know if I missed anything or got anything wrong.

_________LTR_______SPS (tactical)
Action....Chro-Mo...Stainless
Barrel.....Chro-Mo...Stainless
Fluting......Yes...........No
Stock........HS.........Hogue
Bedding....Block........Pillar
Finish......Parked.....Bl Oxide

I think that I'd prefer a stainless rifle anyway, the stock is pillar bedded so it shouldn't be too bad, can easily be swapped out, sounds like a lot of guys ditch the HS stock off their LTR's so I'm sure they can be picked up in as new condition for relatively cheap.

Basically, If you plan on having some work done to it anyway, you're better off using the SPS as the base. I'm not a precision, bolt action, kind of guy so let me know if I'm off base here.

Store #1: $729+GST/PST Yikes!
Store #2: $639+PST

Hope it get's here soon...

Remingtons of all types are way up over last years prices :( Ive handled an SPS Varmint and I liked it, but they're not as good of a bargain as they would of been in 2006

Yes I have handled and looked over the sps varmint. The onl reason I can see for the shiny trigger is to identify it as the new trigger. The stock is the same material as the sps basic different shape. And SIR now has them in stock at $625. As for he price increase,it is not just rem. that went up,if you look most firearms went up at the same time as ammo anywhere from 5-15%.

Well, I was considering the 700P, but wouldn't it be a lot cheaper getting one of those SPS rigs? What's the real difference. I'm a bit confused. They're all so similar. Can someone enlighten me?

If the SPS varmint stock is of the same "budget" construction as the hunting versions, I'd guess your eventually going to want to upgrade the stock, which is probably going to cost you at least $400 when done.

The police and std. varmint rifles already have decent HS precision stocks and the metal finish seems a bit better.

the only difference between 700P and SPSS-V is the stock ans finishing....
the barrel is the same 1:12 twist and degrees dished crown:)

My SPS Varmint arrived today. I am very pleased with the fit and finish as well as the crisp trigger. I will take it out for a test drive this weekend.

BTW, paid $660 with GST/PST. Fred's Guns in Delhi has the best price I could find (locally). FYI - he has another in .223 at that price in stock.

RANGE REPORT...

Took the SPS Varmint out last Sunday. Once I got the 10-40x50 scope sighted in, I had the pleasure of shooting a 100yard .75 group with the SPS. I am thrilled with the handling, lack of felt recoil and smooth action. I am certain the I will be able to get that group even smaller. Next time I go out, I am going to go after pop cans at 300 yards.

Great rifle, AND (as mentioned above somewhere...) there's a $30 mail-in rebate from Remington. So the price is even better!

A .243 Win. SPS Varmint has a lot of appeal to me. Where I have several .308's and .223's, this would definitely be a good one to consider for the price.
