700P vs. Savage

4 months! That is the kind of thing that keeps my safe remington free. Almost as bad as buying a ford-chev. Poor America.
 
While I know Savage on the one hand sells a lot of rifles with crap plastic stocks, and others with nice HS or McMillan stocks, they also have some with a laminate that looks good and beds easily. This is my 12BLVSS in .223, with some lee valley teflon tape on the front and rear to help ride the bags.

For some long range plinking and varmint shooting, and after seeing how well the guns my Daughter & son in law perform, I bought a Savage 112BVSS in .25-06. Long story short, I've recently shot a three shot group @ 185 yds measuring 0.486" with handloads. I'm happy. Good bang for the buck. Oh, on it I've mounted a Leupold VXIII, 6.5x20with Varmint retice.
 
I've got a 26" barrel Rem 700P in .308 Win topped with a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20x40mmAO scope. I also have a 20" barrel Savage Model 10FP LE in .308 Win topped with a Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10X mil-dot scope. For me, I bet the Savage can produce very similar 100 yard 3 shot groups, although the cost of the Savage rifle was almost 2/3 of the Remington.
 
Some very good points. I expect my new 12BVSS in .223 will be here early next week. I got a smoking deal for the scope, a 4200 8-32AO Bushnell. Not the top of the line, I understand, but capable it should be. I have another 4200 and a 3200 on a couple of hunting rifles and I really like those.
 
Lee collet sized fireformed Win brass, 75gr Amax, Varget, CCI BR4. Work around listed data from Hodgdon. Benchmark is another good powder choice if you find too much compression with Varget.

Do bed that action first for max performance.

I am hoping to buy my 1st precsion rig this spring.

I really like the new F TR, but buying a cheaper rifle and adding a new stock may be a great idea too. Really got me thinking.

How hard is it to get a stock impoirted from Sharp Shooter?
 
The nice laminate stock on the Savage comes from Italy. Made by a furnaure compnay there for them. Thier cost is almost $100.

When they introduced the new line of target rifles in the wood stocks they sold out immediately. The hang up on making more to fill orders for what turned out to be a big seller was getting more stocks quickly.

I'm sure the 75 gr Amax is the best choice for very long range, but here's another option. Once or more fired Win brass, lee collet sized, CCI BR4, 24.4 gr Varget, 69 gr SMKs or 68 gr Hornady HPBT. Initial testing shows the SMKs seated 76 thou off the lands shoots 0.5 MOA five shot groups. What I should have done from the start, and will try soon, is to seat it another 20 thou deeper for mag length seating. I suspect it will still shoot well.

Oh yeah and the velocities are right around 3000 fps.

i got both rifles, but speaking of parts/accesories... i'll go for the Remy.
 
I've been working for Clayton Dublier and Rice(Remingtons last owners, who just sold the remainder of the company) for 2 years, I'm starting to understand why Remington has not made money for years, buy Savage and don't look back.....

I recently decided on the Savage instead of the Remi in .223, and I have always owned Remis. This is my first Savage.

There have been reports of QC issues with the .223 rem police model, ie. bolt face/firing pin problems.

Plus, Savages are offered in faster twists, 1 in 7", whereas the fastest the Remis are is 1 in 9", in that caliber, which will give you more bullet options.

I was ordering parts from Sharp Shooter Supply the other day and asked them about their stocks and shipping to Canada. They told me they haven't had any problems shipping their stocks here.

On another note, my Savage 12VLP .223 with a 1 in 7 twist barrel should be arriving at my door any day now. Who stocks 75 & 80 grain Amax bullets? Preferably in Calgary as I should be there in a couple of weeks.

What is this Lee Collet sized brass that everyone is talking about. Do my RCBS and Redding dies do a different or lesser job?

Lee collet dies - come in the round yellow case, they're on the shelf at Russells in Calgary. The collet die is only for neck sizing, supposed to do a better job of setting concentricity and neck tension/diameter than regular dies. I just got some, but haven't used them enough to see a difference yet.
