7mm 08 A few Questions

I have a Howa Alpine Mountain Rifle in 7mm-08. It is the same action as the Vanguard. It comes with a fiberglass synthetic stock (HS Precision I think?) and a cerakote finish.
My 13 yr old daughter decided that she likes it, and will be taking it out this fall. I'm thinking of loading up 120gr Sierra ProHunters for it, since that will do fine on a doe, either Mule Deer or Whitetail.

I've taken several deer with that rifle already. It is plenty for deer (and bigger species as well), is light to carry, is weatherproof, shoots MOA or better with the right ammo, and kicks light enough for a small statured 13 yr old girl. Don't see a downside.

7-08 is just 7×57 reborn.
There ain't no free lunch. Energy comes with recoil.
Having said that, 7-08 shoots bullets of good ballistic coefficient at adequate velocities.
It ain't 7 mag, but at modest range it will do as well. Dead is dead on big game. Bullet placement matters. Shot in the ass with 7 mag is hard to recover too.
Long time 7x57 fans in our house.

Thanks so much for posting game that you have harvested with your 7 08 ! Thanks also for showing the make of rifle and bullet information . That's what I was after !

I have seen game taken with the 7-08, but have not personally used one to take game animals.
However, I own 2 samples if the 7-08's ballistic twin, the 7x57. [Remington 700 Classic and a Winchester M70 Featherweight]

With the 7x57, I have taken deer, moose, elk, black bear, sheep and a host of smaller critters.
Never felt I was undergunned, and always got the effect I was looking for...dead within a few steps or right there.
Dave.

Anymore of you fellas want to post pictures of your 7mm 08 ? Let us know about the rifle, stock / scope/ accuracy ? How much you paid ?
Thanks !

If you are planning on shooting factory ammo, consider foregoing the 7-08 and select .308 Winchester. Mainly because all of the ammo mfrs overcharge for the 7-08 round. Really, it's the same case, same primer & powder, and very similar weight of bullet, why is Federal charging $14-$15 a box more? That just irks me.

and that is a pretty fair point to a fair degree, although im not sure how much variety you would really need for when it comes to the 7mm-08 an its practical uses..
with one Fussy barrel you might be out of luck in regards to finding a factory 120gr specific load, or 140gr specific load or 160gr specific load but its almost unheard of that a Gun will dislike every packet of factory it encounters.
i understand this would then make the gun alot less 'usefull' for covering the variety but at the end of the day you;re either 'varminting' with it or huntin deer with it or hunting bigger game than deer with it :)

im going to assume canada has more options in factory 7mm-08 than Australia does and for a slightly less wack on the hip pocket per packet but for someone who is fairly new an doesnt want to complicate too much, 308 or 708 is similiar and bottom line would be -are you loading or buying and if so how much of it are you guna do.

for ease of use- 308 will do everything the 7 does....

Good to know ! I would say initially after I purchase I would be shooting factory ammo as I'm not set up for reloading . The reason I'm exploring the 7mm 08 is that my present hunting rifle is a Remington 700 classic in 30.06 wood stock 3x-9 Bushnell scope I find the gun can be heavy and recoil is strong, yes I know if I'm not shooting a heck of a lot what does the recoil really matter. So if I'm going to purchase a new rifle in 7mm08 thinking I would go with a fiberglass stock and maybe some metal that is more impervious to the very wet conditions here in B.C.

Bought my first 7mm-08 in the 70's, a Remington 788 carbine. Still have it, it's still very accurate and a joy to hunt with. I've had two others, and a 7mm-08 AI built on a Rem 600. Used it on everything from coyotes to big bears. It would be hard to find a more useful all around cartridge. - dan
