7mm-08 vs .280 vs 7mm WSM

The 7mm. Hmm..... That lovely .284" bullet, that gives a near magical balance between weight and sectional density to be comfortable to shoot in all shoulder fired guns, and still pack a wallop at distance.

Here's my take on the three.

7mm/08. At it's finest at silouettea metalicus, but a fine balanced short action big game round, equalling the .308Winchester( my favorite) in nearly everyway, better in some, lesser in others, but the .308 is still the bench mark of this family and will not be de-throned that easy.

.280Remington. I was going to buy a Remington 700 chambered in 8mmRemington Magnum or 7mmExpress Remington in 1981. A fine rendition of the parent .30-06 case, with that flat shooting, catch up ability at distance,... with a little..... very little less punishment on the shoulder. A Remington 700 Mountain Rifle chambered for the .280Remington is like a Winchester M70 Featherweight in .270Winchester, a match made in Haven:eek:,.....New Haven that is;). Two true classic combos.:agree:

My purchase of the Rem700 was hijacked by the local gun dealer who talked me into my first Model 70 instead. It was chambered for that rendition from Remington, a "do it all"-" all over the world", if there ever was such a beast,....the 7mmRemington Magnum. Which leads me into........

........7mmSTW.

A nice idea, some use I guess for that cavernous 8mmRemingtonMagnum case, but really, the 7mm Weatherby filled that bill already, and it's been dropping Big game with Hip-Hop:redface:,...I mean Bang-Flop authority since the 1940's;), and in practical, everyday economical rifles and ammo combo's, if it can't be done with the BIG7(7mmRM), could it be done with the 7mmSTW, really???
I've always beem able tp push STW ballistics in my M70 anyway. 175BTSP@3000-3050, what more could I do with the STW.

Out of these three you listed, the first two are winners by a mile, with the third, a fine cartridge in it's own right, but duplicating what has already been achieved, and looking for a home with those who desire to be flamboyant over practical, which leads inevitably to obsolescence.

^ i fail to see why a 7 mm wsm isn't as practical as a 7 rem mag. i own both and way i figure is its more practical. refined model of the rem mag.

Actually Tyler if you are referring to my post, I need my reading glasses. I could have sworn I read 7mmSTW( Shooting Times Westerner) in Kelly's OP and not the WSM. Nevertheless, my comments regarding the STW versus the Remington Mag would still owe true to the 7mmWSM. A nice concept, and a new take to stir up rifle sales, but Weatherby and Remington already absorbed 95% of the hot rod 7mm market. If the short, fat round turns your crank, by all means take her out. The normal Magnun Rifle with 24"-26" tube, medium contour, with recoil pad, sling , scope, mounts etc is already pushing 10lbs, so the weight loss with the WSM action length is not worth mentioning, and would be traded of with possibly feeding issues with that steep shoulder and low taper.

Nothing against it but can you use 175 grain or larger in the 7mm wsm? I have 5 different 7 mm calibers so am not against any of them. Most of the restriction against the practical nature of the short action magnums relates to this. I love the 7mm wsm for what it is a great lightweight, accurate deer and sheep rifle. Would I use it for elk and moose? Sure, with care and no overly long range shots, but I would rather take my 7mm Rem Mag for that kind of hunt. And no overly long rainge shots with it either!

Of course you can use a 175gr bullet in a 7mmWSM!?! The 7mm WSM is every bit as capable as the 7mm Rem Mag. And no long range shots!?!

If ya can't do it with a 7-08 you shouldn't be trying with anything larger anyways. ;)

That being said , like RTS's fondness to 7mm chamberings , you can't have too much of a variety of .284 tubed rifles.

Of the three listed, I only own one. The 280. I love the caliber, shoots great, not bad for recoil, and will work good for anything that I hunt up to moose. The 7mm-08 is a sweetheart of a cartridge though, my dad has one, I wouldn't even take a guess at how many deer he and I have taken with that rifle. Can't really go wrong with anything off the 308 case, and if 7mm is your thing, the 7mm-08 is a fine cartridge.
I don't know too much about the 7WSM, and have no experience with it.
If it comes close to the 7mmRM it should work good for all North American game. I'll stick with my STW for a heavy hitting long range rifle
If I have to choose one of the 3 listed it, would be the 280. Little more steam than the 7mm08, with enough to hunt anything I hunt withing reason.

.

I wholeheartedly agree!! Some day I will own them all!! That is if my wife doesn't catch me....

oh no, not another good man that gets dem dam hen peaks, ouch! Like I say, there is/was a lotion for it, but better yet, AWOL can provide you with the "WHIPPED" magazine subscribtion info. Luck man! Once ya bin peaked hard, it's tough to get back into the man's world!

a friend of mine has a browning micro medalion in 284 win that i covet ..... it is a very nice rifle , it also feels just right when you pick it up .
i've been gathhering parts ,reamers , dies and bullets / brass the last year to build one when i finally find a short action savage / stevens cheap .

my stw , although heavy , will print tiny tiny groups the next country over , so i try toi avoid using it unless it is in large open loging slashes / fields .

Haha, the next county over, my STW is the same, shoots amazingly well, it's my most accurate rifle!

I however would love a 280/284!!
