Or to post the stories either. All we get to read about is one Bull Moose and a ton of yotes. Tod, you're holding out on us. C'mon, pull out the Polaroids.:p

Seems like I've stirred up a hornets nest. Just remember to each their own.

To clear up the debate a little, I have access to other calibers which definately will down elk. I just wanted to throw out an educated guess (hypothesis) that a 7-08 could be capable of downing one.

A wise man once said to me, Dead is Dead.

It was good see everyones opinions. Nothing like a balistic/caliber/hunting rifle debate on Gunnuts to perk ones interest/opinions.

I think I wanna see some polaroids as well. this thread needs more pictures! your pics of critters taken with your 7-08 or the 7x57 I guess.

As many have said, the 7-08 will get it done. If you live near Elk and have the whole season to hunt and wait for a perfect shot the smaller calibers will be fine. I have only taken two Elk, both decent bulls. Both died in their tracks, no trailing or running second or third shots. # 1 fell to a 300 gr.X bullet out of a .416 #2 fell from a 225 Nosler from a 340 WBY. If you only have smaller guns fine use them, just pick your shots and range. Otherwise Elk are tough critters, use more than enough gun.

Save yourself some headaches and get a 338WinMag for elk hunting. I know too many elk hunters that have shot nice bulls and lost them due to puny cartridge/cal size. Some however, have seen the light and upgraded to the best elk hunting cartridge the 338Winmag.;)

I could kill alot of elk with a 223 with 60 grain Nosler Partitions. Could I find them all? Maybe not. Any cartridge can kill. The 7-08 will give you consistent lethal results, assuming you place a proper bullet into the vitals.

Actually Powder, as far as I'm concerned, NO you did not. You asked a very valid question that you should be commended for at least asking before going out to get your first elk. My chosen round is also the .338WM I believe it to be the best, but that's just me. Noel, .... he's a beaut' man, fat too, whad'ya feed him? :D

Lots of oats from our field! :p Field dressed, skinned and quartered he still added up to 542lbs on the butchers scale! The biggest one he saw that fall. And it was thankfully the very best wild game I have tasted too!

A 338 WM is a very, very poor choice for someone that is not experienced wiht it, or able to shoot accurately with the anticipation of heavy recoil.

I know several (abotu 10) BC guides that all would prefer that their hunters show up wiht thier 270 that they can shoot ell, rather than thier new 338 that they bought in anticipation of a big moose or elk...

if you can handle the recoil levels of the bigger cartridges, great, fantastic, but if you shoot beter wiht our 7-08, by all means use that, and shoot well...

it's pretty simple. Use a cartridge youare comfortable and confident in. Once again, I say, if you will point you 30-06 at an animal, the 7-08 will do the same job, if you use the proper bullet for the application.;)

I have a 30-06. I remember your lesson from the 7mag loaded to 7mm08 levels and the impressive results from the TSX. Pretty good results Gatehouse.

I can tolerate a 30-06 just fine and I may up the ante to the 30-06 if I ever were faced with a elk tag!

Im still curious and would like to try the 7-08 on elk one day. I'd just use all the proper yada yada yada... like I posted in my original post starting this thread.

I do have the patience for a proper shot and have passed down deer at ranges I felt were beyond my comfort range.;)

You are right, elk is really tasty! Its a good change from moose meat. thats right not beef. I said it, I like wild game more than beef.:dancingbanana:

I used a .338/08 last year on bears. Very effective round. Like an idiot I sold it:( I have used the 7mm/08 on big mulies, black bear, whitetail, cougar, and one elk. All dead with a single 139 grain Hornady BTSP. That was back in the day before I was reloading now with all the awsome bullet choices out there I wouldn't hesitate to use a 7mm-08 on anything. And yes like an idiot I sold the 7mm-08. The only two rifles I really regret selling!
