A 338 can load a 165 to 250, up to 300 if it's a lapua. Whatever someone thinks they are getting in a 35 Whelen, the 338 wm beats by several hundred ft/sec. A 250 partition through a 338 not only hits harder/faster, it has a better sectional density, and here's the real selling point......you can find 338 250partitions....or any bullet you choose. Even in our site sponsors and EE, it's odd to find any 35 cal rifle bullet.
 
338 wm does just fine with 300 grain woodleighs

Promising results with 275 grain speer semi spitzers in my gun on paper but no animals yet; might take it out for black bear with them too but I have another good load with 225 hornady inter bonds and 30 rounds loaded.

Lots of choices with the 338

If you’re getting 2950 with 250 grain bullets in a 338 win mag, you need a new chronograph
 
From a 232 grain Norma Vulcan bullet @ 2,750 fps to a 325 grain Norma Alaskan bullet @ 2,380 fps.
There is not much you can't hunt Worldwide with that. What's not to like about the venerable 9.3 x 62.
 
My LH Sako 85 puts 3 factory Nosler 250gr AB's into just under 1/2" @ 100 yards.
Worked well on moose.
Looking forward to hunting elk, bear and bison with it.
Have a Kahles 1.5-6x42 on mine with heavy German #4 reticle.

this is truly the one gun for everything .... and it can use the common 30-06 case .
i rechambered mine to a "improved case" ( like the improved ackley chamberings based on many rounds ) and i'm able to use hard cast bullets without issue , with good accuracy and good performance on game , while still being able to able to make my own bullets if jacketed bullets dry completely up .
the nosler acubond , 250 grain bullet seems to be one of the best so far for me , with a heavily compressed case full of 760 and a mag primer
 
A few years back, following the :) positive comments on the 9.3x62 by a noteable site member, I decided I ;) 'needed' one. In preparation, from a site member close by, I acquired a set of RCBS dies, 100 new Lapua unprimed brass and 'quantity' of 285gr PRVI bullets. For something a little different, and :redface: going the 'inexpensive' route, I opted to get a full wood M-70 Zastava from Trade Ex. Primarily at local gun shows, I've also acquired a variety of other bullets, for load testing, along with a 'few' boxes of Norma once fired brass. Pushing the 285gr PRVI with top end loads using either IMR 4320 or IMR 4064, I was amazed at the accuracy of that first batch or two of reloads, especially considering the firearm. 1" groups at 100 yds.:d:d MUCH better than I ever expected and so much so, I've yet to test/try any other bullets. One day but it won't be any time soon. With the results, I ordered a healthy quantity of 285gr PRVI bullets, :redface:and another Zastava, but this one in 7x57.
 
I just purchased a Husqvarna M98 with a 4x scope. I am very excited to get to shoot it, and I think I will eventually change out the scope for a low power variable optic like many of you have suggested. Thank you for all of the excellent information in this thread, I know I learned a lot!

I wouldn’t say it better, but here what I think, less recoil, heavier bullet that are fatter, no need for a magnum action! The 338 would be faster so flatter shooting, probably a better choice past 300 yards! I use to have a Ruger no1 in 338 win mag but never took game with it! It was a good round on paper and a round that is quite popular! I would go 338 over 300 mag of any kind but I will stick with my 9.3x62’s

Thanks, I may have to get a 9.3x62 just for the heck of it because they sound cool. :)

They are more than cool! They are a great all around rifle for big game… I’m new to that caliber though, I use to be a 30-06 diehard but after taking my moose this year with my Ruger no1 S in 9.3x62 I’m convinced it is a great caliber for big game!!
