9.3x62

I love the 9.3x62 and I’m on number 3, but I still can’t see what it will a accomplish that a 200gr partition in a 3006 won’t.

But where’s the fun in that!

It’s the nearly the same analogy as the .308/30-06 debate . Yes with light for caliber ammo they are close . When you put heavy pills in them the difference is magnified substantially. A 9.3x62 loaded warm and heavy is an entirely different beast.

Fair enough. I certainly can feel in increased recoil!

And I think that the bigger diameter bullet make for something too! Just some quick numbers 30-06 200gr bullets at 2600fps = 3001 foot pounds, 286gr bullet out of a 9.3x62 at 2400fps = 3657f/lbs of energy… over 655f/lbs more energy seems like quite substantial… but maybe it is negligible?!?

Just fired my 9.3x62 for the first time and the recoil wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, I was pleasantly surprised. It does have a pretty wicked muzzle break on the front of it that did the job so well that the front sight fell off lol. I guess I don't need back up irons! Now all I have to do is find a better scope than the one that came with the rifle.

My 8x57 with 200 grain bullets going 2450fps give me more felt recoils than my HVA 9.3x62 with 270gn bullets going 2500fps… I think stock design and overall rifle weight makes a huge difference on felt recoil!

Does anyone else have on-game performance experience with the PRVI?

prvi is + or - a lapua mega copy (a very good cup and core bullet already). a great bullet if you do not push the speed on it and that cheap to get in those days.

i know people in croatia that used it agaisnt some nice european brown bears. i have a friend in slovenia still using it for the same purpose while another one moved to barnes 250 grains.

recoil pad is helping on reducing the felt of the recoil.

I stocked up on PRVI when trade ex had it for 30$ a box (maybe 2-3 years ago) since it was cheaper to buy factory ammo than just brass. I was planning on using it for the brass but I've been very satisfied with the performance (and accuracy) of the factory ammo on deer and black bear. I would have no qualms using it on elk or moose if I had the opportunity. Keep in within realistic hunting ranges and I think you'll be fine. I will reload the PPU bullets a bit hotter next time around but I don't feel handicapped by the factory ammo. As has been mentioned the PPU bullet is a well made standard cup&core bullet and it expands very well. I think the super-premium heavy bullets in 9.3 are overkill for what I hunt. I've gone more the other direction with lighter 232 gr bullets.

My 9.3 is a Zastava and shot 1.33" for the first group just to sight it in. I haven't worked up a load for it yet! The scope is a 1.75x5 Bushnell and it's a good pairing.

I love my Cz550 9.3x62 and don’t find the recoil bad at all, more of a push than a punch. Much milder than my 300 weatherby. Use both 250 gr and 285, both shoot well. I particularly like the 285gr Norma Oryx which gives me 2450-2500 fps with my hand loads. Easy to reload for, like a large 30-06.

I think it's funny that with all the posts in this thread people want to compare the 9.3x62 to the .338WM...

Fact: 9.3mm = .366cal.

So the actual closest comparison to the GREAT 9.3x62 is the 9.3x64Brenneke, but the real most practical comparison is the .375H&H, grandfather of pretty much all modern cartridges.

I have .338WM, 9.3x62, .375H&H, .416RM and a .458Lott, and I stupidly sold my .35Whelen, so I have experience with all these.

I love the .338WM as the best all-around N.A. game cartridge (IMHO), but damn the .366x62 is one pancakin' son-of-a-gun! I've whacked a few black bear with it, and after the shot they pretty much just 'tremble', collapse in the tracks right where there was standin'...

Soooo... necrothread revival time. Thank you CGN Hivemind for all the info in the thread.

Just bought a HVA 1640 in 9.3x62. I will be reloading for it, but want to start off with some factory loads to sight in and get used to it .

At present my other two hunting rifles are 6.5Swede and 30-06, Both HVAs.

I use PPU 140g SP factory loads the Swede, and will reload to the same specs (though I hope to work up a load a tad spicier).

The 30-06 loves 165 grain Norma whitetaila, so I will stick with those (or similar) for reloading.

Given those, what would you suggest as a starting point for the 9.3? What load would give me better elk/moose medicine than what I have?
