9 mm arguments

As BCrider said go see Kelly at DVC. A nice single action 1911 would be best for 'target' shooting imho. Best to try a few and get what fits and you like.

So the only place you should be going at this point is out to DVC and plan on spending some money on range time trying out the roughly 10 different 9mm's they have there.

That seems to be the only real definitive answer, and a really good idea. Otherwise you will just get an endless stream of someone else's favorite.

I will have to do that someday. Of course, my plan is to eventually just buy one of each. :D

Regarding DVC, I contacted them this summer specifically to try out some CZ's and they didn't have any for rent at that time. Found that surprising. Eventually I think he did say I could try out his personal Shadow, but it was definately not out of the box - custom trigger & spring. Not sure if anything has changed since then . . . that was mid-Juneish or so.

LOL :D Well that's always one option :D

I heard that they may finally be getting a CZ Shadow as one of the range guns. But even so there's a bunch of other options to try.

And what's wrong with trying one that has a trigger job done to it? It may not reflect what the box stock gun feels like but it shows you what can easily be achieved. You should have taken him up on it. If nothing else you'd now how it feels in your hands and what the recoil was like compared to the others.

Oh, nothing at all - I agree, but at the time I was looking to handle a stock unit because I couldn't afford the gun & the custom work all at once. In all likelihood I would eventually end up doing the same/similar thing . . . in the end I got side-tracked with 1911's (my true love) and ended up going that direction, so I never did go try it out. The shadow is the next toy on my list though, so I'll probably head over there one day and see if the offer is still on the table . . . saving my pennies!

Which 9 mm?

For now I am interested in good old fashioned target shooting.

I haven't heard anything about the CZ line until I joined this forum and I have to say I'm intrigued. What are the costs vis a vis the Glocks? Where can they be purchased in BC? Is there anybody that owns one that would allow me to go to the range with them to try it out? :D

Truth be told the more I read the more I am inclined to go Glock but since I have yet to buy one I am still a free agent!

Thanks for your thorough feedback thus far all, I love CGN!

I agree with sunray: Whichever fits your hand best. Let me qualify this by stating that, much like shoes which don't fit properly, so a handgun which does not direct the recoil straight back into your forearm and shoulder, and it won't do this if the grip doesn't fit correctly, should not be considered for purchase unless you are able to modify the grips.

Some, such as the S&W M&P for example, provide you with differently-sized grip inserts. Have a look at those and make your choice accordingly. And lastly, take any advice on the net, including mine, with a grain of salt. There is nothing like personal experience to guide you.

I've been there. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Which 9mm?

sig p226, hk p7m8, sig p210

HK P7M8? You must be joking. Do you know how many (some of them fatal) accidents have occurred with that pistol? In the US(among police officers) as well as in that pistol's country of origin(Germany) again among police officers?
Because of the grip-cocker feature I would not let an inexperienced shooter touch one of those pistols. I train with one regularly, and in my hands I consider it one of the safest pistols around, but then I've been shooting pistols for more than 40 years and safety is my most primary concern when on the range.

Very happy with my Beretta 92FS.

Tried the Glock and Sig and found them too light, toy-like.

I'm not a big person, and I don't find the supposedly "bulky" grip of the 92FS to be an issue.

Glock 17: cheap/available, ultra reliable, no external safety to worry about "safe action" trigger.

that was my choice. ***disclaimer*** that I have a slight bias to glocks, and I am still waiting for mine in the mail, so i cannot base that on experience, just lots of research.

Yeah, that's funny, all stupid accidents with firearms involve police officers. This is false data for the firearm. Note that Glocks, the SAFE ACTION pistols, have seen so many accidents in police hands that we don't care anymore to take this data into account.

9mm's for me...

Browning HP MkIII; Norc NP29 1911A1; Colt Combat Commander; and Star Model BM.

In ~ 30 years of owning various 9mm's on various platforms this is what my preferences are these days.

The H&K P7 was developed for the (then) West German Police. The accidents that happened with that pistol were then confined to police personnel. Bavaria, Lower Saxony mandated the use of the H&K P7 for all police officers. The pistol was also in use in Saxony as well as in Thuringia. In 1983 the New Jersey police were issued the P7. During the first month three officers shot themselves in the leg during training.

You claim that this is false data. My sources are the international weapons magazine " Visier", as well as various German daily newspapers reporting these incidents as they were happening. What is the basis for your claim?

wait for it.....no particular order.
G17
Sig 226 or 228
SW MP9 - grip sizes interchangeable, a good plus.

I did not recommend the 1911 9mm as a first gun. it requires some minor Gunnar work, unless its an STI..in which case its not a budget-concious purchase
