9mm 1911, what's the advantage over a 45 ?

I guess I must be missing something, but I can't for the life of me understand why anyone should want a 9mm 1911. I admit being fairly new to pistols and have only shot a couple of 9mm's, but to my mind the 9mm is nothing compared to the 45acp. Surely owning a 9mm 1911 must be like owning a pit bull without balls. What's the attraction ?

.... Ammunition is more readily available ( as is the brass ) .... often more rounds per magazine. The 9mm in the newer loadings, perform very well, and do so with less recoil and muzzle blast. .... in smaller and lighter framed pistols, the 9mm version is, in general, easier to manage. Having shot both, it really comes down to personal choices, as in life, most things are a compromise. .... David K. ...

The 9 is popular in jurisdictions where you are allowed magazines with more than 10 rounds. A Glock 17 then has 17+1 rounds whereas the Glock 21 has 13+1 rounds. When pistols are restricted to 10 rounds the 9 loses all its "firepower" advantage. But it is still less expensive to shoot 9mm than .45 So the 9 is good for practice. When you first start with a handgun you should try to get 30,000 practice shots in as soon as possible. ... do that with a 9.

" but to my mind the 9mm is nothing compared to the 45acp"

Would you like to get shot with one? For those of us who don't reload, 9mm is the next cheapest option.

Don't get caught up in the "stopping power" debate unless you're going to be using it for that purpose.

I love .45acp but at $25 a box it's just too expensive to be fun.

.... And the so called, "Stopping Power" debate, really is a non starter, when you come down to the modern +P rounds. Accuracy is also equal, for practical purposes. The 9mm does lose out to the .45ACP in some of the more specialized action shooting disciplines. Reloading both, I find the 9mm a little easier to deal with, and obviously, uses less powder per round. ...David K. ....

I can accept the cost argument, but being a reloader and bullet caster this is not an issue for me. Other than cost for non reloaders I can not think of any advantage. My .45 NP30 is a joy to shoot compared to 9mm pistols, this makes a big difference. Having a great time is a lot better than having a good time.

Are you really missing the obvious or just trying to stir up another pointless 9mm vs. 45 debate?

You're right! I am cutting up my 9mm right now. I thought they were fun to shoot but you have opened my eyes.:stirthepot2:

Not only is it cheap to shoot but you're shooting a 9mm in a frame designed to take the beating of a .45. Even with +p+ 9mm rounds the gun will last longer.

When my Series 80 Custom Colt 1911A1 9mm acts right there is a reason to have a 1911A1 9mm. It is capable of putting two 9 round magazines into a golf ball sized hole at 10 yards. I am still working out some small bugs with magazines, slide stop. and bobbles; these should clear up in a week and the pistol will be great! Regards. Richard:D

9mm advantages; lower recoil, lower ammo cost (factory and reloads)

Personaly I wouldn't buy a 9mm 1911 because I think there are better platforms for the caliber, but I would get a 10mm 1911. I mean why would anyone shoot that puny .45 when you can have a manly 10mm? ;)

Are you trying to say that the FBI agents in the US aren't manly because they couldn't handle the 10mm?

I'm not trying to stir up anything. The thread is not simply a 9mm vs .45 debate, it is specifically about why anyone should prefer a castrated 1911 over the genuine thing.
The only sensible reason that I have been given so far is that 9mm is cheaper for non reloaders than .45acp. I think that anyone who does not reload for anything other than rimfire is not serious about his shooting.

My apologies! Didn't I read somewhere that the .45acp would not penetrate modern Kevlar helmets, but the 9mm would?
