Do you own a .30-06?

I agree, even with horrible glass, and me being no means a good shot, and cheap canadian tire ammo 1.5-2" 3shot groups is what I was getting at 100yards. Problem was after 3-5 shots I lost zero in the glass and for some unknown reason I haven't bought decent glass yet..
 
I bought one because when I got back into hunting a few years ago there were so many new cals my brain hurt. So the question came up "If I were going to buy one cal rifle for hunting in BC what would it be?" Almost 100% of the answers came up 30-06. And I have been in stores out in the boonies that had ONLY 22lr, 30-30, 308, and 30-06 more often than not. Besides I could get both stainless and lefthand bolt which was exactly what I wanted so any opportunity that came along was pretty much covered. Now that I have more money and understand more about the cals I own a 308, 30-30 and a 223 as well. I dont care if it is the BEST choice but it is a GOOD choice and unlike some on this forum, one I am happy with. I can load the same bullets mostly in all 3 30cals as well so that worked out nicely too. When you are spending a lot of money on a new rifle that may well be your ONLY choice then smart money goes with the 06. If more cash comes up then maybe something funky along the way but you gotta commit to something to start and best a safe choice.
No regrets and I am keeping my Ruger.
 
All things considered, the .30-06 is still king and will remain so for another 100 years. It does it all and it does it well. No other cartridge even comes close to it's popularity. It's the measuring stick by which all other cartridges are compared.

Whatever interests me, basically. The 30-06 is a good choice for many hunters, but it doesn't really interest me. I've had a couple of them and the next one will probably be when I inherit my dads 30-06, and I'm in no hurry for that.

The 30-06/308/7RM/280/270/7-08/7x57 can all fill the same roles.

Let me rephrase then. Where and when a lot choose an '06, what do you chose to use?
To narrow it down a little, if you were hunting locally, possibility of Mule Deer and/or Moose, range 75-250yds, when you went to your gun safe to get prepped, what would be the choice?

If the choices were what I currently own, I'd most likely grab my custom 300WSM, since it's my favorite rifle. After that would be 375 RUger, becuase I like that, too. Then most likely it woudl be my 7RM, but if I was just going deer hunting in the timber I might grab my 30-30 Remington 788 or 223.

I've been thinking about getting a light weight, short 260 or 7-08 for hunting local deer. Shots out to about 400 yards one minute, then you are in deep timeebr the next. Should work well for that.

Good choices, and logical. Briefly, a 'few' of mine would be;
- On 'the island' for Deer, 7x57 or Dad's '06.
- In the interior where our cabin is in 5-15 for Deer and Moose, Dad's '06 or my 308 Norma Mag.

Another possibility for close 'stuff' in either circumstance, my newest 'toy', 348W. Now, where the rest fit in, 22LR, 219DW, 25-06, 7x57/12ga, 44-40, 444, 45-70 & 458WM, :confused::confused::confused:I don't know!:bangHead:;)
 
I have normal family bills and the usual stretched budget.I can't afford multiple rifles and don't see the day in the future when that will happen. The wife now drives a '94 AWD aerostar because it does the same job as the Honda.
"ugly and old fashioned is cheap".
That's why I will be hunting with one 30-06 for the forseeable future that I will get for cheap because some newer $1200 cannon has caught someone's eye. I would love a $10k custom rifle; but I will get the same result for less than 5% of the cost with an 30-06.
 
its a classic cartridge! i have a browning low-wall single shot and a p-14 enfield, too bad ive never fired either one!
