a few cats from this guiding season

Thanks for sharing those awesome pictures with us and being a lover of working dogs, am sorry to hear of the loss of one of yours.
I do have a question for you..... drawing from your vast experience with Cougar in the terrain that you hunt in, what would your choice/ choices be for ideal Cougar rifles and loads ?
I'm certain your opinion will be of interest to all of us..... and again Thanks.

Thanks Kevin,
I have had hunters use everything from 22 Hornets to 300 mag. They all work if shot in the right spot. I have had hunters miss from 15 yards, break legs, hit one lung, each time shooting like this created problems, and lets not forget the bow hunters.
I think the best all around gun would a 30-30 with a scope. The scope is for the once in a while shot where only part of the cat is visible and the distance is 50 yards.

Man we're lucky those things are instinctively afraid of us...

X2.....i.e. under normal conditions but when cornered or more particularly when wounded the situation could become highly unpredictable from scenario to scenario.

Those are some beautiful images of the treed cats.

Out of curiosity, how does the Cougar normally react when cornered and/or wounded? Do they continue to stay up in the trees? I am not at all familiar with the characteristics of that carnivore but having dealt with Leopards for many years that species becomes extremely dangerous under similar conditions!

My folks always carried a couple of shotguns loaded with buck shot as back up to double rifles......those shotguns actually saved the hunters on numeous occasions in the usually "close quarter" conditions as those cats can move like greased lightning.....I've no doubt the Cougar could equally be as fast when threatened.

Needless to say, the dogs deserve the most praise and credit.

A wounded cat will usually go after the dogs instead of the hunter, although you have to be prepared for anything. I don't think cougar have a mean streak like a leopard.

Can/do you take the lynx too?

And do most guys get a (really nice I imagine) rug made of the cougars?

And as so many have already commented, some of those cats are much larger than I imagined. Great pics, thanks for sharing.

Yes we can take one lynx per hunter a year. Most guys get life size mounts made, the odd one rugs them out.

Using hounds to find & corner/tree your target is not hunting, IMHO.

I liken it to jacking deer or "hunting" free-range cattle. No sport in it...

The rifle is enough of an unfair advantage for us (OK, maybe it just "evens the odds" but still), do the tracking/stalking yourself.

And don't put the dogs in harms-way for your own selfish pleasures.

Real men don't need hounds to hunt... :p

* this in no way means I oppose the killing of these beautiful animals, although I don't like the methods in which they were...

I don't think you know what your talking about.:jerkit:

The dogs trail the cat and tree it, but it can take hours or even days to find the right track, in a location where the dogs can be put on the track.

Chasing dogs through deep snow ,up steep hills, and over deadfalls for hours, takes a lot more effort that sitting in a treestand or blind, or waiting while someone drives game to you. Do you consider sitting in a treestand sport? How about waiting while some drives the game toward you? How about riding a quad, then getting off to shoot the animal? I would like to see some of the people that are condemning hound hunts follow the dogs in tough conditions for a couple of hours. Many of them wouldn't even make it an hour.

How about you going out and tracking a cougar yourself, without the use of dogs. You could show everyone how it's done.

chilcotin(Doug) would you PM me your phone # again as i can't find our original PM's from last year. I'd like to discuss and try to set up a hunt for next January and need to plan now I think. Thanks alot as I wanna bag me a cougar and eat the bugger and see how she tastes. :D Cheers,

You are a real Jacka$$, and you have no idea what your talking about. You are a real man. Please explain. Alot more goes into it then bait hunting or sitting on a field, using trucks and atv to find game. Do real men retrieve their own ducks when the fall in the water?

I was under the impression that it was almost impossible to hunt Cougars without dogs as they are to hard to track, trail?

I think that without dogs... and being deep in cougar country, you may become the hunted by them....
And all the "real hunters" like john r1 would pee in their pants when hearing the blood curdling battle cry of a cougar as it lunges from a tree, or is ready to pounce from behind. :D

When are they gonna open the Cougar season in Southern Ontario! I would like to jump down out a tree with a spear and get one. :D

What are your harvest numbers per season?Don't worry about the haters they harvest all there game with a sharp stick!

He wouldn't even hear the cat before it was on him.

No spears allowed, you have to jump out of the tree with a knife in your teeth, tackle the cat, then cut it's throat.:D
