A Good General Purpose Optic For The AR15

Around $400 USD I believe.

The glass is excellent. It still feels a bit large for an AR-15, but it seems perfect for a .308... as it was designed for.

Not surprised. I just wonder, based on final pricing, how much that $400 will put it above/below their competition....

Have you actually handled or tested on of these ?

I'm eyeing the Vortex Optics Strikefire (or Sparc) for mine, but I haven't ordered yet. Has anyone has any experience with the Strikefire? (I think the Sparc is probably too new for reviews)

The Vortex Viper PST 1-4x has been getting some good initial reviews. Listed at $500US online down south.

strikefire is sold out across canada. have to wait until july from what i have been told to get a new one. it has been getting excellent reviews. as for the sparc im debating on getting one too. these red dots are nice as they have a screw in eye piece that puts doubles the maginification. there is also the seperate magnification optic you can purchase that puts magnification up to 6times.

The Leupold is sitting pretty far ahead of the rest of the competition; S&B and Premier Reticles being the main points of interest, PR dropped the 1.1-8x from their line, and S&B is or at least was sitting far enough behind the CQBSS, that it will be a Hail Mary if they actually produce it.

Everyone needs a suppressed SR-25 ;)
I encourage everyone to write your MP's to that effect as well.
Its hardly ninja assassin quiet, but it makes for less heachaches and the neighbors don't hate you as much.

Good luck. Most people will tell you to buy a Larue or ADM cantilever mount, they are very nice but quite pricey. Cheaper options are the Armalite 1 piece mount or the newer Burris PEPRhttp://www.burrisoptics.com/arpepr.html. It retails for around $70 in the US and has received some excellent reviews as an alternative to those who don't need the quick attach of the more expensive options.

I have the Burris PEPR and I like it. It seems well made and solid. Priced much more reasonably than many of the others.

Have you considered the Leupold CQ/T? Excellent piece of hardware.

"Leupold's Mark 4 CQ/T is specifically, designed for use with the M16. The integral mount actually fits both the flat-top and traditional handle-equipped upper receivers. Mounted on the flat-top, the reticle is at the same height as the iron sights. This configuration allows co-witnessing of sights. Co-witnessing is a term describing two independent sighting systems that visually overlap if used at the same time. For example, mounting a low-powered scope or dot sight between the front and rear iron sights so that when sighted the scope's aiming point is visible on the tip of the front sight. The two independent sighting systems verify the other's zero. Then, if your rifle is so equipped, the iron backup sights can be folded down and out of view."

I really like the ACOG TA31F I have on my 20" AR15. It's a bit pricey, but the optic is really clear and they are tough! It's a fixed 4x magnification though, so if you want variable, it's a no-go...

If you want a magnified optic a decent choice is the IOR 1.1-4

The CCQ recticle is nice ( its also illuminated )

Here it is mounted on an AR to give you an idea of the size

Pretty well all magnified optics will require a mount that cantilevers the scope forward for the proper eye relief. Also the proper ring height is at least 1.4 to 1.5". A unitized mount such as the ADM , Larue, Armalite etc is the way to go

How much would this IOR go for roughly??

To be honest, for that price, I would go with the Trijicon TR line. I bought my TR24G for $850 from P&D!

Ya it really is a great scope, probablly the best dollar for dollar optic out there in the 1-4x line of scopes.

I had the IOR CQB and did not care for it, glass was descent but a cluttered reticle.

The millet DMS is okay but it shows that its cheap with not very clear glass its very dark compared to the TR24G . Not sure who actually makes the Trijicon scopes but they are excellant

Here's a pic of my setup for Service Rifle and Service CQB:

Nothing fancy, just a pair of Millett Angle Loc 30mm rings in MED height directly on the flat top. Your mileage may vary. This works for my competition and instructing purposes.

Oddly enough, the Falcon Merlin is the ONLY scope that I have had on my competition gun for over a year and a half. In the past an optic would never last longer than say 6 months on my rifle before being installed, zeroed, competed with and then sold only to repeat the process. That's why I can say some optics CAN work and some optics DO work for the Service Rifle's Classic Matches 1-12 or 1-16(as NSCC DCRA does it today). ;)

Use what works for you and your game! :D

Cheers,
Barney

What version is that Merlin? How do you use a 4x optic in a CQB role?

Hungry here: It's the 1.5 x 5 x 30 Merlin. In CQB matches I dial down to 1.5x. Life is good.
