Can someone tell me which is a powerful moose gun? I only have a 30-06 for now, but would like to get one with a little more "kick"! Anyone have a favorite?

Another vote for the .300 Win Mag...

depends on the distance, but you can't go wrong with a 300 win mag.

talk about a kick!

Yup, mine's a Browning A-Bolt composite stalker with 26" barrel in .300 Win Mag. 70 grains IMR4350 behind a 180 grain SP will put 'em in the freezer...;)

Thanks guys!! I think I like your idea of the .300 Win! It is for my brother-in-law!! He is all of 140 lbs!! He asked me what I would get for a moose gun! He has a good one as far as I was concerned, but he wants a magnum! I can't wait to see the look on his face when the skinny little runt pulls the trigger on that puppy! If he does buy one, I will be sure to have a camera ready for your entertainment!!! Thanks again!!:D

How about this!!

From left 6.5x55, 303 Br, 300 Win Mag, 505 Gibbs!

If you want more kick, a .300 Win Mag. will kick just fine. If it takes more then that to get you off, then try a .338 Win Mag. or maybe even a .375 H&H. I know many who would never take anything bigger then a .243 or a 30-30 in search of swamp donkey. Choose something that you can shoot comfortably and you will have no trouble puttin meat on the BBQ.

270/280, '06, 308, 300WM, 338WM, 35 whelen, 7mmRM, * WSM/RSAUM, 8mmRM, 8x57, 45/70, * RUM, pretty much take your pick. All will get the job done. Most are capable at ranges the shooters aren't.

Personally, I like the 338's & 375's - a lot more than I need - I know - but they have a satisfying thump. Plus it's better to have more and not need it than not have enough when you do need it.

Prosper you have a great point there! I just can't wait to see him pull the trigger on any of those magnum's!! He is 6' tall and is only 140 or so lbs!!! This is gonna be good!! I told him his 30-06 was fine, but he doen't listen!!

30-06 is pretty good already but the moose I've shot with a 300 Win Mag and 300 WSM are not complaining neither! If you want a bit more umph, my suggestion is a 300 mag.

I just got off the phone with him! He said he likes the idea of a .300, I told him he was better off with the 30-06! At least if he missed with the first shot, he will be able to shoot it again, and not have to worry about getting back up the tree to fire the magnum!

I don't I agree with the .243? 30-30 yes,even better a 30-06 with a good 165 or 180gr bullet and better than that a .300 Win.mag.
The .338 has always been a caliber of curiousity,in that I wonder how well it would look with my other rifles?
I had a buddy in Edmonton who was maybe 150lbs and swore by his Browning A-bolt in 338.
I'm with the .300 Win mag though, hell I gotta be,BIGREDD is selling me one.

a good advice would be to take him to the range and have him shoot a magnum caliber. Only then he can make an informed decision.
if you guys are in the GTA you are welcome to come over to my club in Cambridge and try my gun.
