A proper headshot

I am not a fan of head shot under most hunting situations.
The video was NOT a hunting situation and so it was to me something with some "educational" value but not entertainment.

I am of mixed feelings about posting it up here. It is reality and therefore why should it be hidden. However we often take a dump in the woods while hunting and I do not want to see any graphic videos of that reality.

Hang on let me upload a video for ya...

I absalutely disapprove of such disgrace on a big game animal. A big game animal diserves more respect regardless of intentions. The OP of this thread has nothing better to do except to stir the chit among hunters.

Amazing the pressure that pops the eyes from the sockets...

As far as an ethical kill goes, it's probably the cleanest for the animal, assuming you don't take off it's jaw to have it run off...

Definitely the messiest for the hunter to clean up though....

I want one!!!!

Reminds me of a small meat buck that I shot years ago ...all that was showing was his head , about 60 yds, away facing me . I put a 30-06 Silver Tip right between his eyes .
When my step-fther came back from his chase (we took turns dogging) I told him that I had just shot a deer that has blue eyes.......one eye blew out to the right t'other blew out to the left .
I've shot a lot of animals (deer and moose) in the head ....conditions warranting .....and no Virginia , no disrespect was intended and the animals certainly never felt a thing .
I do mostly shoot them through both lungs....they bleed out better...

That was pretty f***** up. I don't think the slow motion was necessary twice. Other than to provoke a negative response. Seems like they were fishing for comments against it.

That being said, headshots aren't that uncommon among meat hunters. .30-06 wastes alotta meat on a doe on a heart/ lung shot. I've known plenty of folks who take head shots if they can on a doe to save some meat.

You talk like Jean Chretian..........on both sides of your mouth. You disapprove of it, however you start a thread that is gruesome and not a common practice in North America. Total disrespect of a big game animal regardless the purpose of killing it. Not my idea of being educated in the "proper headshot" world of killing. Stick with AO, they like controversy threads!

I really do not understand what you are talking about???

What thread did I start???

If you have the skill and confidence to do a head shot, why not.
I don't feel good enough to try one myself, but I don't see a problem with it, one shot seems to work.

Heart/lung shot is through the rib cage. How much meat is waisted when the bullet enters/exits?

Wow, good thing we don't have cameras that can see what a bullet does to a deer's heart and lungs on impact. Pretty similar, just inside I guess, so not as "disturbing".

Respect for the animal should include a quick death, hard to argue that this video doesn't show that, even though its not pretty.

This is part of hunting , it isn't unfortunate and it shouldn't be apologized for.If it is too much for someone to handle then maybe the reality of hunting isn't for you.

I don't like turnips so it is simple, I stay away from them. ;)

Glad I'm not eating the meat - yuck!!

Huh? Care to explain?

What I saw was a deer that died pretty much instantaneously.

You're glad you are not eating the meat? That makes no sense to me.

Yup. Messy. But other than the traditionalists making head cheese, or otherwise using it), and the commercial processors (stripping the heads for hotdog meat), the head would go on the pile to be dumped anyway.

Being squeamish because an animal died one effective way rather than another, is foolish.

More folks should know where food comes from. Besides 'the store'.

Cheers

generally this is done so they get the most amount of meat off the animal for the retail market.

i know someone that went to Africa to cull spring bucks (SP) with Remington. they had to do head shots as the meat was going to the European market. said they had to be very careful as an off shot and the animal would sprint away with a shot off jaw or something of the sort and you couldn't catch it or shoot it on the run. (all this done from jeeps at night with a spotlight)
