I have an antique Colt made in 1893. The rubber grips are very worn and I would like to replace them with something new. I found out the hard way that any grips for these revolvers don't always fit right. If my limited research is right, grips for this gen 1 Colt would be different than the later generations. Maybe I am just speaking out my a$$. Feel free to sort my confused head out.

So my question is does anyone know where I could find grips for my old iron? preferably in Canada. Perhaps someone here knows of grips for a gen 1 collecting dust.

Thanks
Moe

Hey Moe, I believe even back when the grip panels were sand/shape to fit? Not a bolt on thing like double actions or modern single actions.

It may be a longshot looking for grips for your Colt in Canada. I would look in the US for them. I remember a number of years ago someone was casting authentic grips for all the old Colts. Sorry but cant remember his name or state. Go to the Colt forums etc for help.

They will need to be fit, unless you're very lucky. Colt frames have always been fairly varied. At least all the ones I've owned were, maybe I was just unlucky. But I couldn't swap grips between them and get a nice tight fit. - dan

Thanks folks. I spent some time fitting the grips I picked up. Sadly I don't have the skills to do a good job of it. Does anyone know of someone that would offer such a service? Is there a SAA guy out there?

Cheers

All of the SAA’s require that the grips be fitted because of the variation in the 2 piece grip frame. Take off the grips, cover the grip frame edges with painters tape. Put the grips back on and go slow and easy. If you see the tape becoming abraded, then stop. The grips will be too big by the thickness of the painters tape, but otherwise should match the grip frame. Remove the grips and do a final sanding to smooth any rough edges, marks etc. That final sanding should reduce the grips to fit very well, if not perfectly. If that’s still not your cup of tea, and you can find a large enough SASS match, occasionally there will be vendors there who sell grips and will fit them for you at no extra charge.

Thanks for the advice. I think I could do an OK job of that. At least I did think I could. When I did I pretty much messed up the grips by not having a good finish match from the sanded and un-sanded portions as well I found in my final product that I could still not quite get the contours to match. I am just a little particular with this as I want it to just be a good job for an antique Colt.

An odd quirk of mine is I am always satisfied with someone else's work but rarely happy with my own.

I doubt I will meet up with SAS folks soon. The nearest place that has matches is 2 hours away and even then only a dozen folks shoot at a match and no venders.

I will keep looking for someone.

Saw an add on #######, guy was selling a set of 3 colt Saa grips, as a set I think. At least one was for 1st generation. Even then they'll be a sand to fit.

If you need new grips (Colt purists call them stocks) you can find Colt copies everywhere on E-Bay etc. If you want something different, I suggest that you take a look at Eagle Grips and Gungrip. I personally like the gunfighter grip from Eagle Grips (many materials or wood to choose from), the bottom is a little bit narrower, the shape fits my hand better.
Then look for a gunsmith in your area to have them fitted or you can send them to be fitted to someone like Peter at Rustywood.
Make sure you don't lose the original stocks they add value to the gun.
About posting a picture of your Colt.
OK

"Stocks" is S&W nomenclature I believe?

Reviving the thread a bit, but Moe how did you make out? I’ve been wondering if there’s anyone up here who is really competent at fitting saa grips as well. Just not excited to take it on myself! Lol

I picked up a set. As I expected I ruined them trying to fit them. I think I am just defeated.

Bummer Moe. If it's of any use to you, use painters/masking tape on the frame and all exposed metal, then mount the grips. Then slowly and deliberately sand them down until they are level with the tape.
