Actual Grizzly Shooting

300

I have shot a charging griz it is not as easy as some guys make it out to be by the time I fumbled around it was at seven paces in front of me when he fell i shot him with a 300 mag with a 200 gr partition when i was out moose hunting I hit him in the throat and broke his neck but he still managed to take a few extra steps steps that made me crap my pants I also had a friend out hunting that shot a griz with his 30-06 180 gr bear claws it took six shots in the boiler room to make him go down he was 8'3 and his skull was 24" they are very unpredictable they will do almost the complete opposite of what you expect that is my experience anyway.so all in all take the gun you are most comfortable with it will pay of in the end.

I have never been in a griz attack situation but I reckon it will be close in shooting if it comes to that so how bout a lever action carbine in 44mag?

I forgot, I know someone else who shot a grizzly. It was a smallish bear, around 5 1/2 feet. he was walking through some brush and the bear stood up on its hind legs about 15 yards from him. A quick shot to the centre of the chest dropped the bear. He was shot it with a 6.5x55 and 140gr soft points. It was the Bosnian made ammo that was available in white boxes (with red and blue trim).

So I assume a 44mag would work?
I was just about to sell mine but new I would find some use for it!

Never shot enough Grizzlys to make a real evaluation as to their tenacity and/or lack of it. In my grizzly slaying days, all I owned was a 30-06. Never thought of it as being inadequate, and was not disappointed. Grizzlys figured it was lethal though, since they obligingly lay down and died. Regards, EE.

Thanks to all of you for your answers. I feel better now about the .300 Win Mag. Come to think of it though, I might get a Rem 700 XCR in .375 H&H just because I'd like one!

All the best,
Albertacowboy

my hunting partner was charged by an old sow grizz from 50 feet he was shooting 180 g failsafes out of his 300 win mag he hit her twice and hes still here,a little rattled though, might have had to change his shorts.

Boer suen, if you go to garrettcartridges.com under the feedback column there is an excellent article of a person who accompanied a band of rifle hunters that wounded a big bear in Alaska. The wounded bear circled them in tall grass, and this fellow successfully defended himself with a short 44 magnum revolver using garratte? hard cast ammo.........
It makes for a great read!

a 500 or 460 S&W double action would work nice for up close shooting

Nice call... I've got one of each... they will do the trick on Mr. Grizz, errr..... hypothetically speaking of course... I mean, IF you are hunting in Alaska... ;)

Cheers!

I've shot them and watched them shot. I will be having nothing to do with any .30s. The .44 would be good I think if it was close and fast. A big rifle bullet would be my choice and it would start with at least a .4 or better yet a .5

I know a guy at work that shot 5 or 6 grizzlies with his MINI 14! lol..i was blown away. He used the mini 14 as his all around camp gun. That was a few years ago mind you. He now has a remington 700 for bear control. Im pretty sure he was using 30 rd mags with the mini too. Ahh the good ol' days.

grizzly gun

either or will work, not much difference to a pissed off grizzly, your still in deep kah.if one charges you, call his bluff and charge him back!!(let us know how you make out).dont be so paranoid about bears havent you seen the movie "grizzly man"?

this thread is still going?

I love it when people always chime in with "buy a .500 S&W" !!

better hope your first shot is perfect then. with recoil like that by the time the muzzles goes back down it's all over.

Shot 2....

One with the 30-06 at 10yds (180gr Failsafes) (previously wounded... took a few to keep him down).

The other was this year and was shot at 6yds full charge (7-08AI and 140gr XLC).

Still stand by the belief that the best rifle for stopping a charging grizz is the one you have in your hands at the time.

Still here to write about both encounters...

There is a big difference between hunting a grizz and stopping one inbound at 5 paces!!

At such a time my 505 Gibbs might feel inadequate and stopping is just what it was designed to do!!

You can have it. Shoot many heavy recoiling handguns? I'd rather have something up against my shoulder rather than flail away with a handgun.
