Africa, Here I come.....I'm back !!!!!!

Got lion on 2nd day in Kalahari, moved east to north central SA and took 2 zebra and 2 gfiraffe and mountain reedbuck. Then off to Congo and took 3 duikers, Peters, blue and yellow back and a beautiful 29 1/2" Bongo. unfortunately didn't get an opportunity at sitatunga or dwarf red buff.
Still at my acreage in BC so can't post photos yet but will be sure to do that as soon as I get back to Yukon, if anyone is interested.

Naw, pictures of game almost none of us will ever get to hunt in our lifetimes would be boring. :)

Can't wait, and congratulations on the lion!

Details .... nitty gritty details ..... ya know we Waant it.

How did the PH's Congo loaner rifle work out for you? ... etc., etc., .....

How does it feel to draw down on a lion?, how did it all go down?, etc., etc. ...

Me?, I'm off on a .22 R.F. black squirrel safari, come dawn. Got the whole weekend to make that one perfect stopping shot. Them ONT. squirrel's, they got some fearsome teeth 'n claws too. .....

Again, Congratulations. :D

Sorry guys don't have the cable to tie my camera to computer here so don't have the technology to post pics, but I did take lots. Forest gorilla, bongo, buffalo, forest elephant, flowers, butterflies, Gabon viper, equitorial rain forest, pygmies, I got better at it later on in the month so many more pics of the Congo and related stuff than Kalahari and northern SA.
I shot the lion right in the face at 40 yds looking at me from behind a skimpy bush, he was being very pissy by this time so I decided to take no chances, he just dropped to the ground and never twitched. I was too low for the brain but caught about a foot of the spine, same effect!! TSXs performed flawlessly on all game and I was able to use my rifle for the whole hunt including the Congo. Apparently Ben Franklin permits (for those of you who don't know these are 100 dollar US bills) are good in the Congo. Weather was good throughout, bugs were bad, biting ants, ticks, tse tse flies, spiders.........not too too bad but enough that my leg modeling career is definately over I'm afraid!! One nasty little tick is going to leave a permanent scar for sure.
Congo was amazing, teak trees 14 ft around the butt, the canopy has to be 300 ft above ground, bush so thich you can't push or fight your way through it without a machette, flowers everywhere, butterflies by the millions, it really was cool!!

I'll put up more later.

Welcome back Doug.

did you practice your french in Congo?

all the best and see you soon.

Phil

It was Brazzaville, Republic of Congo not the old Zaire or new DRC.
Phillipe;
I did use my little French quite extensively some understood some looked at me like I had 2 heads. Many dialects and a lot of pigeon french spoken, Parisien french understood by the educated but not so much by the bush blacks, and pygmies. They speak a mish mash like fanagulo or chilapalapa but with french as the base and several local languages as the filler.

have to see the pics of dead lion. hunting a lion can be dangerous, either 1:0 or 0:1. good to know you won this round. lol

how many bullets you have brought back home? 60 was enough?

I brought back 40 live rounds and 10 animals, I missed a couple of blue duiker that were too far to shoot anyway, 1 giraffe took 3 the other took 2 (only to be humane, both first shots were lethal) shot a young warthog for meat and shot a guinea fowl just to check rifle at about 100 mtrs and I lost a live round somewhere in the Congo and I shot 2 more duiker they couldn't find, blood but really thick stuff and they didn't try very hard. Duiker in the Congo are kinda like jack rabbits on the prairies when I was a teenager, if you don't get that one wait 20 minutes and we'll get another. They also feel time wasted tracking a duiker is time that is better spent looking for the bigger stuff. Oh ya I also shot over the mountain reedbuck on the first shot, then he made the mistake of stopping on a knoll and looking back over his shoulder before he would have disappeared into the cover. I recovered at least 6 bullets and performance was exactly as expected when hitting heavy bone. The lion bullet shed all 4 petals but destroyed about a foot of spine, one other shed a petal and the rest are just like the ads. Bongo was 250 yds right at first light 1 shot just off centre of the neck hard quartering looking at me and spined him as well. Could just see head and top of shoulders over the greenery. Instant flop of course.
So quick rundown, one miss on reedbuck (2), giraffe (5), 1 ea for lion, warthog, 2 zebra, bongo, 3 duikers and a guinea fowl and one lost and a couple hail Marys at some long range duiker and a wounded duiker or 2 for a total of 21 which I think is accurate. I wasn't counting the round I lost.
The temps in the Congo were much more moderate than anticipated 20-30 deg none of that 40-50 like Zambia. It was actually quite pleasant except for the 80-100% humidity but overall quite pleasant and good sleeping temps at night.
