AK 47 or AR 15

Give me a break (P.S. 99% of GotX are not active either).

It was a stupid comments about full auto. Red and I get to play with some cool toys and when you try to share your experience its a little odd when someone pipes up and makes a comment about an illegal weapon - or question the inteligence of a modification.

Never saw you pissy when I posted picks at CGS -- oh until I stopped...

I don't see his comment about full auto having any particular tone to it? Maybe I am just reading it differently?!?

I am not trying to be pissy, but we are not all operators, so it really isn't necessary to be so condesending on a forum open to general gun enthusiasts.

And as far as posting pics at CGS, I and most everybody there know what you do for a living, so no comments about the status of your equipment are needed. Over here you have a much larger membership so it is kinda tough for a general member to know THE ####ING GUN IS IN IRAQ!;)

M4...

Our Sigs as BigRed has mentioned in passing previously have not been stellar performers.

I have years of muscle memory on the M4/C8/C7 etc so its foolish of me to try to learn to run a new system.

The 552 is a 9" (IIRC) barrel -- its not exactly a great tool for a gunfight than can go from 0->400m+

IF was was jungle living with Savages with no 5.56mm around - I would likley use the AK (and I hope I never get into that sit...).

Some of the new AK clones made in the US look really sweet -- and I occassional dream about buying one for the US, but I'm not overly heartbroken that I cant have one in Canada (I'm pissed off -- but not haertbroken)

Ban my AR well now where talking me walking to the border with my gunsafe on my back... (okay in the back of my Ford King Ranch)

I dont think we where being condesending -- just incredulous at the post.

-- maybe were just cranky tonight
(its 0146 and I have to get up at 0515 -- why am I still up)

I think this topic getting beaten to death every month has my (and others) tolerance down.

I just wanted to finish this issue --

KevinB, could you elaborate a little more on the Sig not being .."a stellar performer"..? I have a buddy with one (full length barrel) and this thing is a tack driver, and functions perfectly at the range (yes I know I said at the range:runaway: )

Thanks, just looking for some input in comparison with the Sig against the 2 heavy hitters in the "real world" for which they were designed.

KevinB, go to bed... we can discuss another time:p

Real Operator KB

Hats off to your vast knowledge KB. I am impressed that your softer, more feminin side came thru though. I loved how you displayed these "weapons" on a foo foo flowery blanket. I would have thought a poncho liner would have worked so much better..being a real operator and all..but perhaps its your artistic side coming thru also...:dancingbanana: (you know, poncho liner, ranger blanket, you get em issued with your poncho..:p )

You do understand that you are not the only people on this forum who ever played with those toys, do you?

Stupid comments about full auto? What is stupid about it - care to explain?

Comment about an "illegal weapon"? Where are they - care to point?

question the intelligence of modification? Anything to say about it except for personal remarks? I can tell you that the flame out of your rifle is probably a foot long cause you are missing a supressor. Besides, AKSU you where trying to make out of an AK is 5.45 and it is relatively easy to hold it while shooting full auto. 7.62 is way to big of a recoil for such a small and light rifle. You made it work - cudos for you. Not a reason for condecending remarks.

Edited below:

And again, while I was typing it all goes ahead without me. :(

Tnx Laniru for understanding. Although I am not as young as KevinB and my memories perhaps are not that fresh, I still had a chance to use many of those things in discussion and hope I have something to contribute

To KevinB - Ignore or disagree with my opinion if you choose to, but do not try to shut me up - the forum is a discussion rather then a monologue.

Cheers.

Stokka.

I gave the quickest set of knowledge that I had at the time...And I have seen AR's fail to lock closed on the smallest amounts of debris such as sand etc. Otherwise they seem to operate fine. Most AR's one would ever see at a range are not military grade parts and many do not seem to have the sand cuts in the bolt carrier for debris like many M16 variants do.

Many AR's inclusing M16 variants are reasonably maintained with chrome lined bores and non corrosive ammo...so consistancy will be a result. But many AK's are not well maintained and even more don't have chromelined bores...corrosive ammo is a-plenty, to which I would love to see an off the ground corroded bore AK hit accurately past 150 meters(but then again many engagements are prolly within that range regardless so technically a moot point)

I think this topic getting beaten to death every month has my (and others) tolerance down.

100% +1

Thanks for doin so

p.s. My feelings are hurt now...im'ma cry :(

Well, some of us that will never handle an AK outside of a vacation to a former Soviet State or working for NATO/UN. However, there are those of us who hold an interest and appreciate the huge bank of information and opinion that some of you who operate in hostile areas do have.

It's more just interest I guess for some of us, and I must agree with KevinB about the allure stemming from the fact that we can't own and use AK's in Canada like we could a pistol or shotgun.

I must say though, the debate between AK's and AR's is beaten pretty raw. There was a show on Discovery about a year ago going over all of this. Pretty informative, but I know that some people tore it apart in the forums. I would suggest at least watching it to hear from the developers of the rifle. Hear what they have to say. I thought it was pretty interesting.

But, enough of that. Cheers all

No one is saying BigRed or KevinB's mods are beyond reproach.

Quite the opposite.

Yet, most folk here are clear that the above named add and remove personal risk to life and limb with the equipment and training choices they make.

And people who risk FAR greater consequences than others typically make for pretty introspective folk.

To me, it makes a hell of alot of sense to shut up every now and then and listen. Its not ass kissing. Its f*cking theft, because I am getting something without having paid the proper dues.

Coincidently, this makes for a great learning opportunity for others, who ALSO don't have to absorb the same risk to learn these valuable lessons.

But enough about them, because they really dont require that much introduction anyway.

Lets talk about your comments instead.

Maybe I read you wrong, but I got a big sense of a "well gee whiz, Kev, just LOOK at it. No wonder you're all f*cked up!" comming out.

That is funny. Because bluntly critiquing the informed choices of those with fairly transparent credentials WITHOUT offering the courtesy of the same CV is rude to the audience.

More colloquially stated, it appears you got caught with the Walter Mitty story going and got fairly called on it.

***Edit: Jebus. Either that blanket has strong sentimental value, or its a put-on.

not sure why people get bunched up panties over the ak discussions and comparisons.
of course some of us want to talk about them, it's one of our forbidden fruits.
many of us can't pull out the safe queen and fondle it for ourselves, and no, i'm not going to battle to find out for myself.

I just like machines to be as simple as they can, more moving parts more of a potential for a problem..The AK has it's faults(it's not exactlly a new gun)but would be my choice for simple reliability reasons

Ak's can be loaded and actioned with the right hand never leaving the pistol grip -- most of people I know leave AK's chamber empty safety off -- not nearly as fast to get into action -- and the safety manipilation is one of the major drawback to the design

disclaimer: I just shoot my RPK/M78 for fun at TacRifle matches here.

I found the new-type improved safety

and improved mag release

are a huge improvement in the ergonomics department. Also, if you shoot the RPK (I know, it's "rifle" size and weight then), accuracy improves to about 2-3 MOA with good ammo (LOL is "good 7.62x39" an oxymoron?)

I definitely agree that the lack of a hold-open is a major problem. The only way around it I found was to count rounds and reload with a loaded chamber and an empty mag. Definitely not something that would practical if your life depended on it.

Just my 2c
