AK 47 or AR 15

I definitely agree that the lack of a hold-open is a major problem. The only way around it I found was to count rounds and reload with a loaded chamber and an empty mag. Definitely not something that would practical if your life depended on it.

Just my 2c

There are AK mags that take care of that problem. It's the follower I believe.

disclaimer: I just shoot my RPK/M78 for fun at TacRifle matches here.

I found the new-type improved safety

and improved mag release

are a huge improvement in the ergonomics department. Also, if you shoot the RPK (I know, it's "rifle" size and weight then), accuracy improves to about 2-3 MOA with good ammo (LOL is "good 7.62x39" an oxymoron?)

Where did you get that mag release?

The Croatian mags had followers that were flat in the rear so they would hold open the bolt (until you released the mag anyways). Enough to feel the difference in the cycling anyways.
FWIW my Romanian Romak PSL has a bolt hold open that can only (easily anyways) be activated by an empty mag.

I have 3 AK's here in the states. They are all ultra reliable. My VEPR K has a heavy barrel and receiver. It is a tack driver but weighs a lot. I also have a Bulgarian milled AK and a stamped Romanian AK. All of them have the tactical mag release. I can change a mag almost as fast as a drop free mag rifle. I have used them in 3 gun comps and do well with them. I use a Kobra red dot and they are very fast. All of my AK's have been modernized by the tactical release and plastic stocks and Kobras. I would trust my life on them.

In the 223 world I use an AR-180 and have an XCR waiting at the dealer for its folding sites.

This thread has some hostility in it for sure. For any new members they would be scared to post anything or ask any questions after reading this. You get highspeed guys telling people "to stay in your lane" over nothing. lol.. I agree we get alot of the same threads and questions over and over. With new members that will happen. Our search feature sucks. I thought Perkerwoods reply was pretty good. We're all gun enthousiasts, obviously some guys have more experience than others, so let's all contribute in a positive manor.

I just wanted to thank KevinB for the best Xmas present ever, him holding an AK...never thought I'd see it...:D

+1

And if you do feel like ragging on somebody, well like my Dad says,"KEEP YOUR WORDS LITE AND SWEET,BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHICH ONES YOU"LL HAVE TO EAT."

I appriciate it when Kev and company are able to share what they know with us. They have a body of information built up from personal experiance that most of us can't aquirre. I've fired both weapons on the range, both semi and fa, but thats a long way from hanging your neck out on them.

Personally I loathe the charging handle position on the ar series, but the bolt hold open makes it livable. I enjoy shoting ak's and find them somewhat more controlable in go fast mode then m-16's, but as I said, my experiance is limited and range only. I think they both do what they where designed to do well, but that the m-16 design has evolved to where it is today while the ak design has largely remaind stagnent. The galil and valmet's where improvments, but not widely circulated ones. If I could, I'd own one of each, but I can't:(

Marstar carries the yugo mags that hold the bolt back aswell.

I agree, guys that are actually using gear for the real thing are greatly appreciated. There's alot of knowlege to be gained by that. Still were all gunnutz, some of the newer members don't know who's who.

hey Kev B, heres a question for you. I remeber a while back you were overseas and had a true Cz-58. How did that fit into the mix between an AR and AK? cheers, stay safe

Prefer the Cz-58 to the Ak -- the metal stock is ass though.
It runs at a high RoF in auto - but a straight line push to it -- much more controlable than an Ak in auto (but I dislike auto anyway --it not a very useful method of fire)

I still loath the 7.62x39 cartridge though.
