all I want for X-mas is a SKS

200ftlbs actually (not that it matters)

But 30 FEET of drop at 700 yards. Not to mention the winds effect. Or the 1.6 seconds it takes to get there and how far your target has moved in that time.

I guess "combat effective" is a relative term. Effective at engaging unarmed combatants in a styrofoam boat 700 yards out in rough seas.

Actually it is 260 ft lbs (makes me wonder when will it start to matter?)

Also, 30 feet of drop at 700 yards is a nonsense. The drop at 700 meters (in accordance with the soviet ballistics tables) is 0.30 meters which is slightly less than 1 ft.

At the 700 meter mark the stock 123 gr bullet is still moving at about 980 ft /sec

Here is the table for your reference. You can convert kgm to foot per pound here http://www.convertunits.com/from/kg-m/to/foot-pound+force

@edojan - you reading that table wrong. 7.62x39 (army load) drops about 10 meters at 700 meters distance.

that 0.3m deviation you refer to is 0.5 of vertical spread that contains 50% of all hits at 700m distance. So 50% of all your shots should be within 0.6m vertical spread.

If zeroed at what?! 699 meters? Methinks your ruskie is rustie. At that range, the bullet is dropping 1.7 inches for EVERY YARD it travels. Something is being lost in translation.

If fired from a level barrel, the bullet will drop 41 feet below the sight line of the barrel in the 1.6 seconds it takes for it to travel 700 yards.

Ahh. You beat me to it. Thanks. Or should I say "Спасибо"

So according to the chart, if I'm understanding you correctly, if I fired 100 rounds at a target 700 meters away, the 50 holes closest to my point of aim would make a group size of 60cm, and the other 50 holes would be scattered SOMEWHERE above or below that group?

So half your shots would be within 3moa... and the others... who knows. I wonder if they need volunteers to double check their ballistic tables? :-D

Less than a foot of drop at 700 yards???...stop and think about that for a second.

ye something like this. and according to the table 70% of your shots at 700m expected to be within 92cm vertical and 72cm horizontal spread. Sounds like a lot...but I wouldn't stand still if there was someone with SKS 700 meters away from me :D

I checked tables from 91/30 PU scoped rifle army manual - 70% of hits at 700m expected to be within 40cm vertical and 37cm horizontal spread - just for comparison.

Spasibo tovarisch. I stand corrected on the vertical spread. where the calc illustrating the 10 meters drop comes from?

I'm not an expert but I think the drop is due to the bullet. It just can't shoot the same as .308 no matter what gun you're using.
If I get decent group at 150 yard I'm happy. I never killed game more than 100 yards away.

had shot 2 crates out of it and the accuracy basically just disappeared. It also started falling apart.

At first I could hit pop cans most of the time at 100m. A year later I would be lucky to hit a fire extinguisher. The rear sight would shift a bit. The screw holding the bayonet on kept falling out. Guess where a spring loaded sks bayonet goes when the screw comes out. I will give you a hint I still have a scar from it.

I sold it and bought a marlin 795. no regrets. It was a lot of fun while I had though.

I have had opposite experience with the 4 I've had, all Russians, 3 of wich I still have. This sounds like an extremely rare occurrence or someone is trolling, lol...

PS. Buy some tech sights if you like irons. Increasing that distance between the rear and front sight will shrink your groups a lot. The factory leaf sight isn't very good although I've found a way to file them to make them better but tech irons are one of the best things you could do for an sks.

odd enough there is no SKS in stock at Cabelas online or in store. No Sale Sport just closing their store in Regina and they don't have it either.

it a great rifle accuracy suck a little but 6 in group at 200 yard is all good for me it a old rifle and will stay with me for a longtime i stop shoting corrosive ammo cause it take like 2 hrs to do a good cleaning joob on your SKS but ya get your self one
