An old Model 70 workhorse

Drill and tap it. Put on some nice ring/mounts and a nice gloss scope. I would hunt that rifle. Its no good without a scope.

You would be better to trade it to a collector for a shooter 300 & cash. Bubba has had his way with enough of those old 300s.

I wouldn’t do anything to it. If you want a scoped old (but newer than yours, post ‘64) 300 win mag I have a few m70’s with period appropriate scopes and slings I might be tempted in trading.

Yours is a beauty and I would hunt with it as is.

Just came across this old pre-war Winchester M70 in 300 Magnum. Dates 1939 thereabouts. I don’t think it’s been out of the stock in 83 years. Full original down to the sight hood and sling swivels. No extra holes either. Stored properly it shows no rust. Just some use on the stock. I often wonder where these old rifles were taken and the memories they made.
Just wanted to share it.

Did I see you post this on FB the other day to a chorus of dummies talking about it being a 300 WM?

I'm not generally a Pre-War fan, but that sure is clean. Great score!

Yes that was me. I think there was only 2800 300 Magnum model 700’s built before the war so not everyone is up to speed on the chambering. Thanks BUM.

The 180 speers on the left (2900fps), 150 speers on the right (3280 fps), 3 shot group at 50 yrds.
Would like to drop the groups but the rear sight is already all the way down. So I’ll try to slow down the loads and see if that works.

I will be following this - I have a much "newer" one - made in 1955 - in 30-06. I have not fired it yet, with anything - I was under the impression that the fourth action screw - up under the barrel in the forearm, whether tightened or loosened, might move groups on target. I could be totally mistaken about that.

Also, from my Dad and others - I think those rifles were from an era where a three inch group at 100 yards was thought of as a very accurate hunting rifle. I suspect it was about that era's ability to produce balanced bullets, powders that were available, etc. If my Dad was typical, a hunting rifle such as that was not fired a lot at targets - no shells to "waste" ...

I bet it has a bit more snap than the good ole thirty-aught-six. What powder did you use for the Speer bullets?

H100V mainly because it’s been sitting here without a use. 64gr/70gr. It kicked as expected. It’s a heavier piece so it was still enjoyable.

I havent thought of playing with the front screw. But I just noticed I have a few boxes of 200gr bullets here. Some Swift and some Noslers. Should change the poi, hopefully lower.

My sight picture with the semi buckhorn could use some work too. I buried the front post dot into the bottom of the rear v and obscured the point of aim. Whereas the point of aim should have been sitting on top of the front dot. That helps my situation a bit.

Yeah, you are like me - I do not really know how semi buckhorn sight picture is supposed to work. Took me years to undo my Dad's advice about taking a "fine bead" and to cover what I wanted to hit - today I want a flat top rear with a bead or square post front - top of bead even with top of rear sight - point of impact on top of the bead. But, again, I might have that wrong. And really sucks that about the time that I figured that out, about too old to even see the rear sight on the barrel - so now trying to learn the rear aperture sight ...

With no evidence or experience, has always struck me that 200 grain or heavier should be what the 30 caliber magnums were about - hard to beat a 30-06 with 180 grain - actually not too shabby with 200 grain, either. For 165 or lighter, might as well use a 308 Win.

This is what I was dealing with Potashminer
The two parts of the sights fit together well but I think I need to hold the point of aim just above the front post dot, like you prefer, rather then underneath it.
Not sure?
